Christmas in Bruges at dusk and into the night feels like stepping into a living fairytale. As the sky deepens from soft blues to velvet black, warm lights reflect on the canals, stone streets glow gently, and the city slows to a timeless rhythm. There’s magic in the quiet corners, beauty in every medieval façade, and authenticity in the way traditions are lived rather than staged. Bruges doesn’t try to impress it simply is, serene, soulful, and endlessly enchanting under the winter night.

Rising proudly above the medieval heart of Bruges, the Belfry of Bruges (Belfort) is a timeless symbol of the city’s beauty, history, and architectural mastery. 🌟

Built in the 13th century, this majestic bell tower once guarded the city’s treasury and charters, standing as a powerful reminder of Bruges’ independence and prosperity during the Middle Ages. Its 83-meter Gothic silhouette, crowned with elegant octagonal details, dominates the Markt square and offers breathtaking views to those who climb its historic steps.

More than stone and bells, the Belfry tells the story of a city shaped by trade, art, and resilience. When its carillon rings, the sound echoes centuries of civic pride, tradition, and timeless charm making it one of the most unforgettable landmarks in Belgium.

Bruges is a place where time seems to move at a gentler pace. In its historic center and surrounding areas, authenticity is not staged it is lived. Cobblestone streets, quiet canals, and centuries-old façades tell stories of a city that has carefully preserved its soul.

The architecture reflects layers of history, from medieval guild houses to Gothic churches and humble brick homes, all harmoniously woven into the urban landscape. Bruges does not chase modernity at the expense of memory; instead, it values its heritage as a living legacy, respected and protected for future generations.

Every corner reveals beauty through balance: history and daily life, silence and movement, stone and water. Bruges is not only seen it is felt, admired slowly, and remembered deeply.

Provincial Palace (Provinciaal Hof), Bruges, Belgium

Standing proudly on the Markt square, the Provincial Palace is one of Bruges’ most striking civic landmarks. With its richly ornamented façade and commanding presence, it reflects the city’s long tradition of political importance and urban prestige.

The site has hosted administrative buildings since the Middle Ages. The current Provincial Palace was constructed mainly in the late 19th century, replacing earlier structures that had served as meeting places for the Estates of Flanders. Its creation coincided with a renewed interest in celebrating Flemish history and identity.

Designed in a Neo-Gothic style, the building draws inspiration from medieval Flemish architecture. Pointed arches, statues of counts and rulers, elaborate stone carvings, and tall vertical lines give the palace a dramatic and ceremonial character, harmonizing with Bruges’ historic cityscape.

Today, the Provincial Palace functions as an administrative and ceremonial building for the Province of West Flanders. It also hosts official events, exhibitions, and cultural activities, continuing its long-standing role as a center of public life in Bruges.

The bandstand in Koningin Astridpark looking rather moody tonight. It’s a special place for me, and features on the cover of my LP from 2010, Magdalena.

An ornate, octagonal bandstand on a stone base, set in a wooded park. The bandstand, originally built in 1858-1859, is lit with blue and purples lights. The surrounding trees are also lit with the same ghostly radiance.

In Bruges. Not the film; we’re actually in Bruges, on its cobbled streets with a thin mist rising from the canals.

We’ve been coming here for many years, realising only as we made our way here this time that this trip marks the 20th anniversary of our first visit. All but the first time have been in December, when both the lights and the cold are at their most numinous.

So much has changed here in the two decades, and yet so little. And we have changed too across those years, so much but also so very little.

Bruges-la-Morte, a city in perpetual decay that somehow escapes death—this city will exist long after all those currently here, including the two of us, turn away from the thin mist on the canals and from the cobbled streets, and cease to exist.
