The Banana Bunker on Reinhardtstraße was constructed using forced labor. It sheltered Berliners from air-raids during the war.

Now it serves as a private museum for Christian Boros and his wife Karen to show their collection of contemporary art.

It previously played host to “Bunker,” a club that allegedly was known as the hardest in the world for its hardcore techno, gabber, trance, house and breakbeat parties over four poorly ventilated levels. It was shut down by the authorities due to health and safety fears, but it inspired many copycat clubs including Berghain.

Locals called it the Banana Bunker in DDR days when it used to store exotic fruit because of its fridge-like qualities – thick walls keep the place cool. Of course, the locals never got any bananas – they were only for the monkeys in charge. 🍌
