UK’s longest-serving bus driver gets royal recognition
77-year-old Kenny, who works for bus firm First Cymru has been in the bus industry for nearly 60 years. He joined his wife Linda for the memorable day at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his dedication to buses.
As well as enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the palace gardens, they also tucked into a royal tea and caught glimpses of the King and Queen, as well as other members of the Royal Family.
Kenny Beckers at Buckingham Palace for a Royal Garden PartyThe Swansea-born grandfather started his bus career at the age of 18, after leaving Llamsamlet Secondary Modern School, when he became a bus conductor after just two days training for what was then called South Wales Transport. Fast forward three years, to November 1969, when he was legally allowed to drive a bus at the age of 21.
The former printer and tyre fitter fondly remembers his early years as a driver when he started at the Brunswick Street depot in Swansea before moving to the city’s Ravenhill depot, saying: “It was great being a driver in 1969. We had so many routes and carried so many passengers, including lots from all the factories, the collieries and British Steel at Port Talbot, but, of course, all that declined in the 1980s.
“I also remember we had double deckers back then, but passengers were only allowed to smoke on the top deck. Upstairs was like a mist. All the factory girls and everybody else was up there smoking, it was unbelievable.”
Kenny Beckers on the buses through the yearsWhile Kenny, who is married with four children and eight grandchildren, has worked for five different companies over his transport career, mainly because of takeovers and management buy-outs, he says he is proud to have continued working in the same place and in the same role.
Now in semi-retirement, Kenny’s two days a week driving is a far cry from when he started in the 1960s, working six days a week on the equivalent of £38 per month. And he puts his long career in the bus industry down to his supportive wife, Linda, whom he says “played an important part in me being able to work on the buses for so long, as she was often left to look after our four children alone for long periods of time.”

I'm not saying they should do... but people could call #ICE and follow the lead of that brave #busDriver... they could call ICE and tell them to "Gargle My Balls"

The #bus took this young man to 6th form #college (this is the last 2 years of compulsory education in #England at biological age 16-18). It used to be in high school, but many areas have closed their school 6th form and students go to a college some km away from their homes.
A few years ago he finished school and got his driving licence, and decided to join #IpswichBuses as a #busdriver (and now transports new students to the same college!) #Ipswich #Suffolk #PublicTransport
I've been listening to a lot of #Busdriver's older songs lately and have to say that Temporary Forever is still a fantastic album. If you've never heard him before, I highly recommend listening to "Imaginary Places" with scratches by #DStyles. The beat is by Paris Zax and features samples from Bach's "Orchestral Suite No. 2" and Paganini's "5th Caprice." Definitely an underground #hiphop classic and a great way to kick off this epically weird rap album.

Thirty-eight-year-old Daryl Jones, who has been with First Cymru for almost 10 years and is based at the company’s Ravenhill depot in Swansea, was named the best competitor from a depot in Wales at the bus industry’s prestigious UK Bus Driver of the Year contest. The title also clinched him a £100 prize.
Other First Bus results included fifth place in the UK for Clive Sutton from First North and West Yorkshire, and sixth place overall for Stuart Beetison from First West of England’s Weston-super-Mare depot who was also named First Bus’ second best bus driver across the country and scooped a £500 prize.
Doug Claringbold, Managing Director for First Cymru and First West of England, said: “Congratulations to all those who took part in the competition at the weekend, and in particular to Daryl for being named Wales’ best driver, and to Stuart for grabbing sixth place overall and being named the second best bus driver in the whole of First Bus. Both have achieved excellent results which they should be very proud of.
“But it isn’t just about these two colleagues; we had a host of other local drivers from Bristol, Bath, Wales, Worcester and the rest of the West of England also competing, who were all put through their paces against 100 other top drivers across the country. Getting the chance to compete in such a prestigious competition in the bus industry is a great honour for those taking part.”
This was the 56th UK Bus Driver of the Year awards, which are annually held in Blackpool, where competitors are put through their paces in a competition on the seafront that sees them compete for the sought-after Driver of the Year top prize.
On competition day, those taking part are tasked with working for a fictitious bus company, and are all expected to adhere to the company’s code of conduct, including rules on dress code, drink and drugs policies and its general driving style.
The day simulates the driver’s normal day, with each driver receiving their own personal timetable, and for up to four hours, the Bus Driver of the Year awards operates the most intensive bus service in the UK, with competitors leaving every two minutes on the three-mile course where they are judged for about 20 minutes.
