Go-Ahead has secured one of the first contracts under the #Liverpool City Region’s new franchised bus network, awarded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. From October, its Go North West business will operate 117 #buses on 45 routes across the Wirral.

The move extends Go-Ahead’s involvement in franchised bus systems, adding to its existing role in Greater Manchester and operations across the #UK. Under the contract, the company plans to introduce initiatives in the Wirral including apprenticeships, accessibility improvements and community-focused services such as the Chatty Bus.

Go-Ahead said the award reflects its experience in delivering reliable and safe bus services and its partnership approach with #transport authorities. Services will begin later this year, with the operator working alongside local stakeholders and welcoming new staff.

The #Transport for #London data show a major shift in our bus fleet. By 2025, diesel double-deckers have plummeted from 5,716 to 1,315. We are seeing a rising number of zero-emission #buses as new route contracts are awarded to bus operating companies across the entire capital. 🚌⦵

A horizontal table shows the number of Transport for London buses by fuel type from 2013 to 2025, illustrating a significant transition from traditional diesel engines towards hybrid and zero-emission technologies. The data reveals that double-deck diesel buses plummeted from 5,716 in 2013 to 1,315 in 2025, while electric double-deckers rose from zero to 1,204 over the same period. By 2025, there are also 747 electric single-deckers in service, and double-deck hybrids have become the most common bus type, totalling 3,776. The table notes that the total fleet size varies slightly each year due to the placing of route contracts.

London’s buses haven't always been strictly red.
After 1984, competitive tendering allowed private operators to use their own colourful liveries. It wasn't until the mid-1990s that the government mandated a return to uniform red to protect the city’s iconic brand and image.
#TfL #History #London #Buses #LondonBuses

An educational graphic titled "Interesting Fact: London’s Buses Were Not Always Red". It features a central photograph from December 1993 showing a "colourful collection" of buses in various liveries—including yellow, white, and red—belonging to different independent operators at North Weald. Above this is a smaller photo of a yellow bus for route 78 and an illustration of multi-coloured buses.

The text explains that while red was standardised in 1934, the 1984 transition to London Regional Transport allowed private operators to use their own corporate colours through competitive tendering. This resulted in a diverse range of liveries until 1994, when the government mandated a return to red to protect the city's heritage and brand. By the early 2010s, Transport for London required all operators to use a fully red livery with roundels.

The bottom of the graphic mentions that Greater Manchester has recently implemented a similar uniform "Bee Network" branding with bright yellow buses.

A bit over a week ago, I left my hat on the bus. Tired, I got up carrying my bag and umbrella, hat left on the seat. :akko_sad:

Today, a bus driver beckoned me over and said "I've got your bloody hat! It's on another bus." We then arranged for a pickup at a bus stop near home, an hour later. 🎉

I have quite a few other hats: a straw hat, a canvas drover hat, trucker's cap, winter cap. But this is my bus hat, it's flexible cotton/polyester with mesh sides to catch the breeze, and it folds up to go in my bag when the sun drops. I've had it over a decade (maybe 18 years?)

Be kind to your bus drivers, they remember.

A dark brown floppy hat with gold mesh sides sits on a white surface. The hat looks woven due to the stitching keeping the layers together. There's a long black bootlace threaded through two holes in the brim, forming the neck strap.

More than two million bus journeys have been made by young people across Wales since the #Welsh #Government launched its £1 fare scheme in September 2025. The scheme, running until August 2026, offers single fares for £1 and day tickets for £3 to passengers aged 5–21 on participating services. #Transport Secretary Ken Skates said it was encouraging to see young people benefiting, particularly in rural areas where travel costs can be a barrier. He added that the investment is making travel more #accessible and affordable. Young people have also praised the initiative, saying it has helped them reach college, work and social activities. Most Welsh bus operators are taking part, though premium night #buses, sightseeing and long-distance coach services such as National Express and Megabus are excluded. Details and operator updates are available on the Transport for #Wales website.

Going on the electric buses in Bristol still feels like being in the future... I'm not sure why, I think its the silent movement and the LED lights in the bus. Its not quite bladerunner - not that dark. maybe more like the Jetsons.

Public #transport use in #Edinburgh continues to rise, with more than 130 million bus and tram journeys recorded in 2025, according to #Lothian #Buses and #Edinburgh #rams. Lothian Buses carried 119 million passengers, up 2.6 per cent on 2024, while tram journeys reached a record 12.5 million, an increase of 3.3 per cent. Growth followed a particularly busy year, including major events at Murrayfield Stadium, the Royal Highland Centre and a strong Festival season. The introduction of contactless payments on trams has also enabled daily and weekly fare capping across both networks. Operators said the results reflect staff efforts and continued investment, while the city council highlighted the role of buses and trams in supporting a growing capital in #Scotland.

#Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
#TfL has published a response to an FOI request on London bus dwell and boarding times, alongside a 2015 report by Steer Davies Gleave. The request reviewed historic parliamentary evidence showing that one-person operated buses generally had slower boarding than crewed Routemasters, though times improved with smartcards and cashless #travel. The released report compares New Routemaster #buses with traditional double-deckers on routes 53, 453, 24 and 29. While New Routemasters showed faster per-passenger boarding and alighting, their overall average dwell times were often higher. The study found rising journey times since 2008, largely due to congestion rather than vehicle design. TfL confirmed it holds no further data on Oyster-era dwell time improvements or comparative averages for all bus types beyond the attached report.
tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transpare

Executive Summary from a March 2015 Steer Davies Gleave report for Transport for London regarding dwell and journey time surveys for bus routes 53, 453, 24, and 29. The study assesses the impact of cash-free buses and the New Routemaster’s three-door operation with second crew members. Key findings indicate that while New Routemasters have faster marginal boarding times, they have higher average dwell times and higher rates of fare evasion (4%) compared to traditional buses. Journey time data shows increases since 2008, specifically a 16% increase towards Deptford and a 17% increase toward Camden. The text details specific peak-time delays and route-specific comparisons in London.A report page titled "Comparative Dwell and Journey Time Surveys" by Steer Davies Gleave, dated March 2015. Sections 1.4 to 1.6 describe surveyed London bus routes, including an overlapping section of routes 53 and 453. Table 1.1, "Bus Type and Operating Condition of Surveyed Routes," compares four routes. Route 53 and 29 use traditional double deckers with one-person operation. Route 453 uses New Routemasters with one-person operation. Route 24 uses New Routemasters with crew operation, allowing passengers to board via any door and hop on or off at the rear while stationary between 06:00 and 19:00. In all other cases, drivers check fares at the front door and passengers alight via the centre or rear doors.A report page titled "Dwell Time Results and Analysis" by Steer Davies Gleave, dated March 2015. Table 5.1 compares dwell times for London bus routes 53, 453, 24, and 29, distinguishing between standard double-deckers and New Routemasters. Data includes average boarders, alighters, passenger activity, and dwell times. Route 453 shows the highest average dwell time at 21.7 seconds, while Route 29 has the lowest at 16.7 seconds. Text sections 5.2 to 5.4 analyse these figures, noting that New Routemaster buses generally experienced longer average dwell times than standard double-deckers in the surveyed instances. A "Stop to Stop Analysis" section begins at the bottom of the page.A report page titled "Comparison with Previous Surveys" by Steer Davies Gleave, dated March 2015. Table 5.5 compares dwell times for bus routes 53 and 453 across 2003, 2008, and 2015, showing that while passenger activity (boarding/alighting) decreased between 2008 and 2015, average dwell times increased to over 20 seconds for both routes. Figure 5.6 is a bar chart showing the distribution of dwell times for route 53, comparing 2008 and 2015 data. The 2015 bars show a shift towards longer durations, with a higher percentage of stops lasting 10–25 seconds compared to 2008, where stops were more frequently in the 5–15 second range. The text notes that three-door buses were expected to reduce dwell times.
