Three friends on the tree. There are 5 in this family - another parent and another baby not far away I'm sure. They are great singers.

5:45am *tap* *tap* *tap* like some telltale heart driving me mad with guilt for not having gone to bed yet. It's a juvenile, and still befuddled by itself in the reflective window film.

This is Percy. I have two Butcherbirds that come in for a feed.

The prime bird is Smiley (F) . Smiley is smallish but with a fierce personality. Percy (M) is bigger but very timid. Smiley waits patiently for something. Percy can sometimes pop in then just as easily disappear.

Percy is larger, thiner, has less colouring in the tail. Physical and behavioural differences mark Percy from Smiley

Late am visitor landed on chair to see what’s what ?

Yesterday approximately same time during fly through stopped on fence; returned to snatch a skink and store in branch of a tree for later.

Sang about it to other patrolling butcher birds nearby to check out this garden space.

Northern Shrike
Lanius borealis

Often caches (stores) prey items by impaling them on thorns or barbed wire, or wedging them into a branch fork. The family name, and that of the largest genus, Lanius, is derived from the Latin word for "butcher"

@DrLiz here’s Smiley singing <flickr.com/photos/bootload/505> a very distinctive call that cuts through the whole house, especially early in the morning.

Each Butcher Bird has a unique call that follows a similar pattern. They are vocal specialists, as good as a magpie. #BirdsOfOz / #ButcherBird

@DrLiz @NessaUndreza I would feed Smiley (Butcher Bird F.) meat, sometimes an oat grain. I’d add a half a blue berry. Most times Smiley would take the piece of fruit last. Turn, give a quick 🎵… then fly off and eat it in a tree.

It was great to Smiley thanked me as she left. #ButcherBird / #BirdsOfOz <flickr.com/photos/bootload/alb>
