This is a Commodore 1541C ASSY 251854 Rev A mainboard. It is from a parts drive, where I took of the servo controller for a different drive, and where the read/write head is dead (typical Mitsumi).

Very interesting transformer on this one. It is missing the usual insulating tape. I guess it is not strictly necessary. But it also shows the thin wire on the primary, and the much chunkier windings on the secondary side.

Yay! Finally 1541 followers! Celebratory 1541 tower of power!

By the way: I added a 1541-II as device 9 to my setup so we can use the Franken-1541 as device 8 for the story disk and the 1541-II hosts the save disk. No more swapping! Yay!

Stocked up on LAG570s. I still have a few BA6301, which is the other motor driver used in the Mitsumi 1541s. So I should be able to repair more failing drives.

I wanted to swap the cases on my Frankenstein 1541s. Both drives are cobbled together from different broken drives. This is why one ended up with a beige case and dark mechanism and the other with a grey case and beige mechanism.

Another broken 1541 is on my desk today. It is a Mitsumi drive, so a dead head is always a possibility. But this one has supposedly a healthy head -- for now! So what could be the issue?

I should really swap the cases of the top and bottom drives! Or what do you think?
And I am still missing a beige ALPS mechanism.

Me thinks that the CPU in my Frankenstein 1541 has been replaced. And on top of that it’s an A variant. The date code is 1983, while all other ICs are from 1984. Works fine though.

I finally got a replacement shell for the broken Mitsumi 1541. It now has a replacement ROM, the dead head bodge, and finally a new shell. It doesn't match the color of the drive mech, but I already have dark brown ALPS drives in beige 1541 cases, so the other way around was still missing. :)

And of course we also need brand new 6522 VIAs. These are drop in replacements. Which is great news for all #c1541 and #vic20 users (and of course PET users, too!).

Zombie Floppy: How To Revive A Broken 1541 Head

The Commodore 1541 floppy drive is a real workhorse, that was used by millions of C64 users. The Mitsumi drive assembly has the annoying fault to have their drive heads fail due to some wires going open inside of the read/write head. A clever user by the nickname of Ruuudi has designed a little bodge PCB to make the dead drive head work again:

Another dead C1541 on our desk. This one was reported as "not working". It was gutted for its 6502 and 6522 VIA chips, but supposedly even with those in place it wasn't working. So let's have a closer look...
