After quite some time, I felt the need to unbox my Mega65 again and give some C64 demos a whirl. That core works flawlessly in my opinion, and coming from the C64U, it was interesting to see if I could spot any differences from one FPGA to another. And no, I can't. Seems fine to me, no matter which one I use. Only when it comes to SID sounds, I do prefer the Mega65 over the C64U slightly. I loaded Wonderland XIII, disk 3 on both and listened to how well the speech samples are reproduced without any teaking efforts with 8580 and 6581 simulations. The Mega65 beats the C64U hands down with both variants, resulting in pretty good sample quality overall. No user efforts needed. The 6581 has just a few sound bites that sound a little bit off, but since I prefer the newer SID model anyway, that's okayish with me in this particular case. But of course you can place some real SIDs into the C64U (which I won't try), you may rightfully point out. Sure. But out of the box, it's a hell of a big difference between the two. I guess what I said before also applies to the MiSTER core, as this Mega65's one is based on that. Make of that what you will, but I for one will play around with the Mega65 for a few more days now. Cheers!
