Die Funivia dell'Etna wurde 1928 eröffnet und bietet eine der spektakulärsten Auffahrten Europas. Nur leider ist die Seilbahn auf den Vulkan Ätna jetzt wegen der jährlichen Wartungsarbeiten außer Betrieb. Als Alternative fahren Geländebusse; ich verzichte jedoch und wandere zu Fuß.

Normal trains or trolleys can't climb this kind of hills, but the cable car can. How it works: note that groove in between the rails. There's a cable running down there, constantly moving, moved by a central winding house in downtown SF, which is the Cable Car Museum, where you can see the giant wheels winding the cables. The trolley-like car grabs that cable to move; it does not have an engine. This thing works on steep hills. There used to be more, but it's an obsolete technology saved for tourism. My phone died before I returned to the hostel because I expected its screen to be on all the time just like my Garmin, so I just wandered around off course. I have a good sense of direction so I know the general direction of the hostel without a map. I rode a steep hill through a sketchy neighborhood north from downtown, and then here just before descent. Got a cute cable car. Paris’s first urban cable car opens in December.
Cabins will carry passengers across Limeil-Brévannes in Val-de-Marne, a suburb long served only by buses.
The 4.5-kilometre route, with five stations, will take 18 minutes end to end, aiming to ease commutes in the southeastern suburbs of Paris.
For local authorities, the cable car offered a cheaper, more practical option than building a tram or metro through a densely populated area.

All quiet, and then one of the visiting kids remembered that what the sitting room really needed was a cable car which normally only runs in the drier months ferrying the odd G&T to the burn at the bottom of the garden. Well the burn doesn’t ask but others do.
