I think that #CAMM is a bad design compared to #SODIMM & #DIMM...

Still, just gimme regular-ass socketed Chips & #DIMMs ffs!

  • Also we don't need to make the THINN-nest machines ffs - just make them #repairable and #serviceable and #upgradeable, because #AntiRepairDesign is way more unsustainable than the 0,1% of idiots who give a shit about whether their #DDR5-RAM can do 6400MT/s or 4800MT/s, simply because most users won't notice that at all (unlike switching from a 2,5" #SATA-#HDD running at 5400rpm to an #NVMe-#SSD that maxes out #PCIe 4x connections.

#FACT: #RAM & #SSD|s are inevitably dying due to age and use and like #ThermalPaste need to be #replaceable for a device to work longterm!

I'd rather have a #THICC af #laptop that actually survives my daily use than some flimsy #tablet that snaps in half if I sneeze at it.

  • No seriously, most devices can't even fit proper ports and cooling fans for no good reason whatsoever!

Also I think it's insulting to frame basic things like "stability" as a negative.

#CES 2024 摘要: #海力士 表示預計將推出桌面電腦可用的 #CAMM 模組

前段時間才花了一點篇幅在聊什麼是 CAMM
在文中主要描述 CAMM 對於輕薄型筆電、小型電腦可以提供更高效能、更小體積的記憶體模組
而在摘要完後就出現 CAMM 將會進軍桌上型電腦的新聞

當然新聞的訊息並不多僅僅些許透漏 CAMM 未來的市場發展
但這也有很多的可能性
包含未來一些小型的 OEM 、套裝機型有機會看到採用 CAMM 模組的可能性
至於零售的 DIY 電腦要看到 CAMM 的出現可能需要花更多的時間
畢竟如果要建立零售的生態系
除了在主機板上面需要重新設計
行銷方面可能也需要重新去做顧客溝通
傳統的「雙通道套組」這樣的說法在 CAMM 上面完全不適用
當然還有更多細節的部份 Allen 不確定

不過現在想到的幾個隱憂是雖然 CAMM 可以透過比較好的走線以及設計來達到更高的傳輸頻率
可是這個設計方式對於散熱會不會產生一些疑慮或是也需要額外的散熱模組來處理廢熱
這些就都要等待時間與市場的反應了

備註1:在 #美光 發表 CAMM 產品前,原先的 CAMM 產品多由 #三星 生產。

備註2:CAMM 的另外一個特色是可以在單片的記憶體模組提供雙通道的記憶體,也就是說每台筆電都只需要安裝一片 CAMM 就可以滿足雙通道記憶體的安裝需求;雖然部分電競筆電也會提供 4 SO-DIMM 的規格可以安裝,但目前還沒有看過有 2 CAMM 的筆電機型。

備註3:目前 CAMM 僅提供 DDR5/LPDDR5 規格,尚未有其他規格,應該是不會有 DDR4 機型的可能,但不確定。

備註4:CAMM 轉為 JEDEC 標準規格後,以 CAMM2 為標準名,但 CAMM 與 CAMM2 仍常見於稱呼該類型記憶體。

要說LPCAMM 前,先聊 CAMM

#CAMM 全名壓縮附加記憶體模組 Compression Attached Memory Module (算是直翻XD) 是自 2022 年來新發展的記憶體模組類型

CAMM 初見於 2022 年 Dell Precision 7000 系列原作為特殊的記憶體模組規格,後來與 JEDEC 合作發展成為公訂規格,成為 DIMM 、SO-DIMM 外第三種消費級記憶體模組規格。

由於記憶體的效能與穩定度會與PCB的布線有關,CAMM 改進了佈線跟體積,使其可以在與 LPDDR (Low Power DDR) 相類似的體積跟效能下,依然可以拆下升級或替換。

過去移動設備上 LPDDR,透過將記憶體顆粒焊在主機板的做法來達成更小體積跟速度;而 CAMM提供了可替換與升級的空間,對於小型機器是一大福音。

美光推出了速度高達 9600 的 LPCAMM2,比現有 LPDDR5X 8533 高出一截,同時讓 CAMM 的產品開始多樣化,有更多的廠商可以選擇。
