Life passes without knowing

At Arnhem Central Station, people move endlessly — from one moment to another, unaware of the journey they’re truly on. Routine takes over. The phone becomes the compass. Eyes locked to screens, thumbs scrolling, souls adrift. Few notice the architecture around them, the rhythm of footsteps, or even the light that shifts and dances across the tiles.

My own journey that day was about learning — observing people, testing new perspectives, and finding hidden vantage points where I could watch unnoticed. (Not too difficult, as most were glued to their screens.)

The girl in black: shot from above, standing outside the station, her silhouette blending with the dark tiles — all muted tones, all rhythm and repetition.
The bokeh lady: framed through the interior lights, her world sharp, while the station around her dissolved into soft circles of light.
The traveling musician: a young woman with her guitar case beside her, phone in hand, a reminder of my daughter — and of how stories move unseen through every crowd.

All shots were taken with the Canon 5D Mark IV and the Sigma 100–400, around the bright mid-morning light inside Arnhem Central Station.

Arnhem Central Station makes people look small

During my visit to Arnhem — home turf of my photo buddy Kevin — I decided to give street photography another go. Kevin makes it look so easy. With his tiny Fuji mirrorless and a 24mm lens, he just hip-shoots away and somehow always nails it.

Me? Not so much. My Canon 5DsR with the Sigma 24–70 Art isn’t exactly what you’d call “discreet.” Every click sounds like a miniature thunderclap echoing through the station. So instead of blending in, I hide in corners, under staircases, or anywhere people don’t look.

That’s where I found this shot — standing beneath the staircase, drawn first by the sweeping architectural lines. Then came the couple, walking right into the frame. Kevin called it “fishing” — waiting patiently for the scene to complete itself. It’s new to me, but I have to admit… it works.

Sometimes photography isn’t about chasing the shot. It’s about waiting for life to wander into it.

U-Bahnhof #Berlin Warschauer Straße, Sep 2025

Der alte U-Bahnzug stand fast perfekt ausgerichtet unter dem Turm und die Fenster unten an der Straße sehen aus wie Augen. Jetzt fehlte nur noch eine passende Person. Zum Glück sind hier genug Leute unterwegs, aber nicht zu viele um jemand einzeln erwischen zu können. Der Radfahrer gefiel mir letztlich am besten. Vielleicht auch, weil er keine weiteren Farben ins Bild bringt. Asphaltgrau, ziegelrot, das Gelb der U-Bahn und oben noch einige beigefarbene Akzente – mehr gibt es im Grunde nicht.

The old subway train stood almost perfectly aligned under the tower, and the windows down on the street looked like eyes. Now all that was missing was the right person. Fortunately, there are enough people here, but not too many to be able to catch someone individually. In the end, I liked the cyclist best. Perhaps also because he doesn't bring any other colors into the picture. Asphalt gray, brick red, the yellow of the subway, and a few beige accents at the top—that's basically all there is.
