Before/after of my latest dollar store hack. I have wanted a little desktop fountain for ages. Nice ones are expensive. Cheap ones look cheap. But for $4, it was hard not to pick up this cheap dollar store fountain to mess around with. Especially when I am also currently playing with this new wood filament for use in Christmas presents.
I wanted something organic and outdoorsy to have on my desk next to my computer, especially as we move into winter. Warm it all up a bit. Maintain a little more connection to the natural world while I'm in the office more. And I never feel more connected to the environment than when I'm soloing a canoe.
Of course, this is dressed up like a straight cedar-strip canoe, whereas my family has always paddled cedar-and-canvas, but it still captures the vibe. A cedar canoe, a cherry paddle, and a moment captured at the water's edge after hopping up on the rocks to go exploring.
I dislike working with gold leaf. A lot. But it is really hard to argue with the results.
I really like how this wood filament takes stain, how it sands, and how I can get it to suggest a bit of grain with the application of some low-grit sandpaper and a bit of creative staining.
I don't think I'm quite done, but I am quite happy.
