The bird is an adult Crested Caracara, once widely believed to be the national bird of Mexico because of its place in popular mythology. (I believed it was the national bird of Mexico even up until this morning when I fact-checked my photo & learned this was an old wives tale altho I first heard it from old dude so... anyway...) A large, eagle-like bird in flight, mid-flap. The underside of the wings are mostly brown, as is its abdomen. Its breast and neck is white, as are its wingtips. Its fan-shaped tail are mostly white, with black ends. The top of its head is black, looking almost like it has a little beret on. Most of its beak and face is orange, but the beak tip is blue.

Here is a Caracara for you. I almost always see one of these handsome birds when driving Hwy 86 between Ajo and Tucson, but this is the first I've ever been able to photograph. The minute you stop the car, they bolt. Original was shot with a 200mm lens. This is an extreme digital crop.
