A new report has found that protected areas and Indigenous territories in the Amazon store more aboveground carbon than the rest of the rainforest.

Protected areas and Indigenous territories were also found to serve as significant carbon sinks between 2013 and 2022, absorbing 257 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

The #Carbon #Footprint of #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) is substantial and growing due to the energy-intensive processes involved in training and deploying AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs).

Training a single AI model can emit a large amount of CO2, equivalent to the emissions of multiple cars over their lifetime.

#XPRIZE makes history, awards $100M prize for groundbreaking #carbon removal
#MatiCarbon developed sequestration technique called enhanced rock weatherin. The company spreads crushed basalt on farms in India and Africa. Silica-rich volcanic rock improves soil quality for crops but also helps remove #carbondioxide from air. It does this by reacting with dissolved #CO2 in soil's water, turning it into bicarbonate ions and preventing it from returning to the atmosphere.

Wouldn't it be be great if we could get a #carbon intensity forecast from #AWS?
Instead of guessing the location of their data centres and gathering data about carbon intensity from various sources, they could give us an API and tell us for a given location what the carbon intensity currently is and a 24 hour forecast.
This would facilitate carbon aware applications.

The Sixth Element How Carbon Shapes Our World by Theodore P. Snow & Don Brownlee, 2024

The story of carbon from a cosmic perspective—how it was born in the fiery furnaces of stars, what special chemical and physical properties it has, and how it forms the chemical backbone of the planets and all life as we know it.

Foundational to every part of our lives, from our bodies to the food, tools, and atmosphere that sustain our existence, carbon is arguably humankind’s most important element.

"In a Universe of wonders, carbon is truly a wondrous element.
Carbon can be hard or soft, sooty black or clearer than crystal.
It was forged in the fiery interiors of stars; in its clear diamond
form, it feels cold in your hand; and out of your hand, it is the
very best conductor of heat. Burning forms of carbon produced
heat that kept humans warm for millennia and energy that pow-
ered the Industrial Revolution. We eat tons of it in our lifetime,
and the unique chemical prowess of this Swiss army knife of
chemical elements forms the virtual backbone of life as we
know it. We are made of it, as Joni Mitchell wrote in her song
“Woodstock,” “We are stardust . .. billion year old carbon.”

Oddly enough, despite its
high abundance in stars, carbon is relatively rare inside our
planet. We see lots of it near the Earth's surface, where we live,
but averaged over the whole planet, it is actually a rare element.
We live in a carbon-rich environment on the surface of a
carbon-poor planet."

Carbon: The Book of Life by Paul Hawken, 2025

Carbon is the only element that animates the entirety of the living world. Though comprising a tiny fraction of Earth’s composition, our planet is lifeless without it. Yet it is maligned as the driver of climate change, scorned as an errant element blamed for the possible demise of civilization.

@bookstodon

Here, Paul Hawken looks at the flow of life through the lens of carbon. Embracing a panoramic view of carbon’s omnipresence, he explores how this ubiquitous and essential element extends into every aperture of existence and shapes the entire fabric of life. Hawken charts a course across our planetary history, guiding us into the realms of plants, animals, insects, fungi, food, and farms to offer a new narrative for embracing carbon’s life-giving power and its possibilities for the future of human endeavor.

"Carbon moves ceaselessly through the four realms—the
biosphere, oceans, land, and atmosphere. It flows in
rivers and veins, soil and skin, breath and wind. It is the
narrator of lives born and lost, futures feared and
imagined. It is the courier coursing through every particle
of our existence, the interwoven lattice that permeates
cultures, lagoons, minds, grasslands, organisms, and our
temporal life. Carbon’s dance of life does not take sides; it
is never right or wrong. It is a timeless path that endlessly
unwinds before us. Like Ariadne’s thread, the flow of
carbon is a story that may allow us to escape the labyrinth
of anxiety, ignorance, and fear the world bequeaths.
Carbon’s increase in the atmosphere moves in tandem with
the loss of the living world. The Book of Life encircles what
has always regulated climate, the pulsing, living mantle we
call Earth."
