1. Can it be automated or outsorced overseas?
2. How spechalized is it?
3. How organized are the workers?
4. Are said workers willing to strike?

I.e. #Carework is paid shit despite neither being outsorceable nor automateable nor trivial is because #Careworkers ain't organized nor willing to strike, knowing that doing so will cause pain, suffering and death!

Whereas a #COBOL programmer maintaining the #OS360 code of a big bank is just a business expense to the bank even if called in to fix broken code at 0300 local for a 6-digit pay or 5-digit hourly rate repsectably...

spent the last seven years of her life before she died in March this year. The
‘men and women who did their best to ease the confusion her Alzheimer’s
caused her, who bathed her and helped her go to the toilet. Almost a second
family to her. They, too, had come to this country from all over the world to
do the job that few others wanted to do. So to have spent part of the morning
listening to Keir Starmer denigrate the role that immigrants have played in
this country was a depressing experience. It was his language, more than the

As a worker in social care in London, | just want to say a few things.
The Labour Party has deliberately chosen to identify the group of workers in UK employment
with the least opportunity to fight back. Un-unionised outside council settings, earning often
below legal minimum wage on zero hours contracts, and female.
We are also the people who look after some of the most marginalised in society: those with
disabilities, the very old, and those who cannot vote: very young children.
The teeth grinding hypocrisy of identifying this group of people publicly to use as an
immigration punch bag, whilst the NHS advertises UK roles in global south newspapers is
astonishing.

‘What must my colleagues *now* think of this country and our welcome? We expect you to work
in a crucial, highly skilled job for less than you would receive as a cleaner (no disrespect to
cleaners, btw: thank you for your brilliant work); we expect you to live in a mould ridden flat, in
tenuous employment for ten years, before we accept that you have the right to live here long-
term, BUT we expect you to look after our vulnerable babies, and our vulnerable adults, keep
them alive, care about them, be kind and funny, keep people company, be constantly clear
headed and on guard against potentially fatal mistakes, regardless of how exhausted or sick you
are - we entrust carers with our care in the most important times in our lives, when we simply
cannot survive on our own, and yet apparently carers are not as important as a banker, or a
strategy PowerPoint wrangler, or dare | say a wonk? Those people, who do the least important
jobs in our country, are worth more, apparently, than my colleagues.

Not a single person who was born elsewhere but has chosen to join us here is a stranger to me.
My life and culture has been immeasurably better for the friendships | have made, the children |
grew up with, and the London my children have grown up in.
