At the start of this year, I joined Mastodon and discovered (among other things) that #spooncarving is a thing. I was particularly impressed and inspired by the works of @emilgoode and decided to try myself. The pics show my very first attempt at carving. I chose the wood poorly, as I discovered quite late a crack starting at the tip. So yea, I won't finish this piece, but on the plus side, the #carving was fun and I will try again!

For #SpookySaturday and #Caturday, here are yesterday's #Halloween pumpkins, carved by yours truly. For the wolf's head, I even attempted that negative-space thing, which I think worked rather well. 😊
We live in a quiet cul-de-sac, so we don't get many trick-or-treaters, but it was busier than last year. It was a fun day (and a bank holiday for us, so the kids were hyped up all day, yay!). We also had perfect weather, with no rain or wind. Still, I'm glad it's over. With kids transforming into mean little ghouls – not just from the sugar rush, but from the sheer excitement of adventure and sweets – I suppose this is the true malevolent spirit of Halloween for parents. 👻🫣

And with that, my Halloween posts for this year are officially concluded. Phew! 🎃

Fun quick carves this year. Kiddo partook and helped gut her gourd, also drew the face for me to cut out. Was very insistent that it had a spicy pepper mouth.

Clown inspired 3d pumpkin carving. Has a bulbous nose and very sharp teeth, with a thick stem. Very creepy.

This friendly pumpkin has a spicy mouth, featuring a jalapeno mouth and two cartoon styles eyes, looks a bit like Casper the friendly ghost who talks with a capsicum tongue.

Maybe also related to the previous post (unregulated adhd): Got myself supplies for yet another new hobby - carving.

I needed to buy something to make a route into my countertop for the kitchen utensil cables, so I got a Dremel (basic one, nothing fancy). Then I looked into carving small pieces with the Dremel, and that led me to carving knives.

I've always liked knives, especially beautiful, well-sharpened ones, and carving gives me yet another way to get away from screens and putting my brain to work, training my focus as I need to pay attention where the blade goes so that 1) I don't ruin the shape of what I'm carving, and 2) the blade doesn't go into my hand.

So together with the dremel I got myself a basic whittling knife, a lathe, anti-cut gloves and some basswood blocks.

Expect to see amorphous attempts at wooden figures in this profile at some point.
