The autumn Milky Way - east Cassiopeia and Perseus.

This monochrome image was taken through a blue filter to enhance the appearance of dark dust features in the star fields.

The second graphic is a sky simulation in planetarium software. The red wire frame box shows the coverage of the photograph.

The third graphic shows the frame coverage in the context of a larger portion of the night sky.

The autumn Milky Way shows its interstellar dust better with a blue filter.

I only have a small size blue filter, so I'm only shooting with wide or normal lenses. Once I get a larger filter for the telephoto lenses, I'll get closer looks at various features.

The starry night sky around the Cassiopeia Milky Way has much more texture because in blue light the impact of dust is greater. This blue filter is actually larger than needed for the lens I used tonight, so I used a step-up ring to make it fit.

Near infrared can make Milky Way photos uniform and bland.

This telephoto shot with an 850 nanometer long pass filter was looking at a part of the west Cassiopeia (autumn) Milky Way that was interesting in visible light. Dark clouds blotted out portions of the star clouds.

In near infrared that effect is almost totally eliminated, so you get a uniform star field that has much less obscuration from interstellar dust. (So tonight, I'm shooting in blue light that will accentuate dust lanes.)

A uniform and bland Milky Way star field because it's near infrared. Most dust obscuration is greatly reduced. Only a few small patches of sky are starless. This is a monochrome image. The red wire frame box shows the coverage of the photo. The star Caph is in Cassiopeia.

The autumn Milky Way in western Cassiopeia.

The central area of the frame is looking at an area with noticeable amounts of interstellar dust. The stars have a yellowish tint compared to the rest of the frame.

The second image is a very close crop of the right edge of the full frame. It shows two small areas that are devoid of stars.

(Some red nebulosity is faintly visible in patches along the lower edge of the first image. This camera is not modified for astrophotography, so the red light of hydrogen is not captured well.)

The third and fourth graphics, from planetarium software, show the coverage of the frame and the location of the frame in the context of a large portion of the night sky.

Lost in Space.

A wide field view of the autumn Milky Way from the tail end of Cygnus on the left, to Perseus on the right.

With so many stars captured in this photo, it's hard to see familiar constellations. But you can see the Andromeda galaxy as a small oval near the upper edge of the frame. (Dark, indistinct silhouettes along the lower left edge of the frame are the shadows of a couple trees.)

A portion of the autumn Milky Way in Cassiopeia.

Essentially no nebulosity, only star clouds, dark clouds, and a handful of small star clusters.

[Edit/add: at the middle of the very top edge of the frame I caught the starburst galaxy IC 10.]

See the 4th photo, which is a close crop of the first photo with blue lines bracketing the galaxy.

Москва – CASIOпея. Вспоминаем уникальный винтажный ноутбук Cassiopeia FIVA MPC-102

Cassiopeia - or at least everybody's favorite W-shaped asterism in that constellation.

The autumn Milky Way runs right through that W.

This was taken with an 85mm lens and APS-C camera.

The second graphic shows some of the star clusters in this photograph. Caroline's Rose cluster (NGC 7789) is in the extreme upper right corner and impossible to miss.

Photo 1: Pacman Nebula (NGC 281)
Captured with a DWARF 3 smart telescope from Tennessee skies, this image reveals the Pacman Nebula’s glowing clouds of hydrogen and dark dust lanes devouring starlight like its pixelated namesake. The nebula sits about 9,200 light-years away in Cassiopeia and is a stellar nursery where new suns ignite amid cosmic chaos. The black "mouth" cutting through the red haze is a dense molecular cloud silhouetted against ionized gas—proof the universe has both beauty and bite.

Photo 2: Triangulum Galaxy (M33)
Captured with a DWARF 2 telescope, this shot of the Triangulum Galaxy—our Local Group neighbor about 2.7 million light-years away—shows its faint spiral arms swirling through a sea of stars. The pale green glow reveals hydrogen regions where new stars are born, while the galaxy’s subtle rotation hints at its cosmic dance with the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies. Even from our tiny vantage point, this spiral whispers: everything spins, everything changes, everything burns bright before fading.
