These lovely harsh paintbrushes (Castilleja hispida) are a common feature in some areas of the Okanagan.

Only flower of the bunch. I've got a childhood storybook about this flower that I remember fondly.

A short hike up Mt Seymour the other day -
#Campanula lactiflora (blue bell-shaped flowers, non-native, sunny meadow)
#Castilleja miniata (greater #paintbrush, tuft of orange bracts, full sunlight)
#Chamaenerion angustifolium (#fireweed; spike of magenta flowers, a bee, and another pollinator, maybe a fly?, full sunlight)
#Corallorhiza mertensiana (Pacific #coralroot, magenta and green #orchid flower, very dark woods)

Eschscholzia californica and Castilleja exserta ssp. exserta - California Poppy and Purple Owl's Clover. Just caught the very last of the super bloom in May at Carrizo Plain National Monument.

The owl's clover is from a family commonly known as paintbrushes. They are hemi-parasites, meaning they feed off the roots of other plants to supplement themselves. In this case they are probably parasitizing other wildflowers that have already gone to seed.

Carrizo plain is one of the largest intact remnants of a native grassland ecosystem, including several alkali sinks. This area escaped cultivation partly due to its remoteness, and has served as a refuge for dozens of rare plants and animals. It's about an hour drive from SLO.

Thank you to @dsfroggy for the use of your camera, and for taking the second photo

@kas I'll see if I can get over to look at some of the plants this year (hard now to walk out of the yard with this pesky kitty hanging around, I'd have to get my friend to distract him while I escape-- would not want him to follow me down the road!) Until that happens, I dug up some *old* photos from one of the 2 nearby pops: first a couple of shots that show more or less typical #Castilleja miniata colours- they can probably be seen a bit darker/lighter

@cohanf LOL, I've done the same with #Tulipa sprengeri (because Tulipa tarda seems to be able to propagate itself that way) — with nothing to show for it so far.

I didn't know the #Castilleja until now. Such beautiful plants. Do you know the species of the one you've been sowing?

I notice that Castilleja is in the #Broomrape family. I've had success with Ivy-Broomrape, #Orobanche hederae, that is now growing on the Ivy that is covering a long wall. But Castilleja seems to have chlorophyll and everything, so it's not a parasite like its cousin, the Ivy-Broomrape, is it?

According to: https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=cain13
One of the popular paintbrushes, this showy annual or biennial grows 6-18 in. high. Its several unbranched stems form clumps topped by bright-red, paintbrush-like spikes. The flowers are less conspicuous than the bracts and greenish at the base, they are subtended by showy, typically red-tipped bracts. They sometimes produce a light yellow or pure white variation mixed in with the reds. Together, the flowers and bracts form 3-8 in. spikes.

This and other Castilleja species are hemiparasitic, especially on grasses, penetrating these "host" roots to obtain a portion of their nutrients. Transplanting paintbrush may kill it. Indian paintbrush has a reputation for being unpredictable. In some years, when bluebonnets (which flower at approximately the same time as Indian paintbrush) are especially colorful, paintbrush will have only an average flowering year. Other years, paintbrush is spectacular.
