Wow that was weird;

Got some plastic ethernet heads today and when I pushed the wires through them they came out the other end.

I guess I gotta get some toenail clippers or something...never had this happen in 20 years of making ethernet cables.

Seems like it might have been an innovation...cause now the blue sheth always fit inside, but if I want to plug it in, I'll need to clip the wires off.

I really like the idea of making my own DIY ethernet cables that can be more cost effective and have the added benefit of I can make them as long or short as I need it be. The only downside is it's not immediately cheaper, because I need the crimping tool for the connectors and only after awhile it becomes more cheaper after I made a couple of them compared to buying off the shelf ones.

I want to use a slightly older router to create a wifi access point on the 2nd floor of my house since coverage up there is insufficient for zoom meetings.

What kind of ethernet cable should I get to run from the primary router to the secondary router and what vendors do you trust to give a good product at a fair price?

The primary is a linksys bought a couple years ago, and the 2nd is older linksys with ddwrt.

Installed 30m #CAT6 cable to one of the other houses on the property yesterday. The #ethernet tester said OK on all 8 lights - but connecting up the switches showed no signal. Used a 50cm #CAT5e patch cable.

Used another 50cm CAT5e patch cable - still no go.

Used a 15cm CAT6 patch cable - all good.

my head hurts now

But not all devices are created equal!

The best option for SWITCHES appear to be 10/5/2.5 Gbps ones, that give you 10 Gbps bandwidth between local devices that support them, and 5 Gbps between switches over . I’ve had a really good experience with the TRENDnet TEG-S750. trendnet.com/products/10g-swit

You can get 2.5 Gbps switches too, but they appear to have much lower *internal* bandwidth. Plus, if you have existing computers with 10 Gbps, the 10 gig option is best.

I love the new batch of peripherals that allow you to run 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps over your existing cabling.

’s modem supports 2.5 Gbps, and I can now tap into the full 1.4 Gbps download capacity over wired Ethernet.
