Let’s take a closer look at our next #scienceglossary term for the research field #energy: “#catalysis". #Catalysts can be metals, chemical compounds, or enzymes — they speed up reactions without being used up: go.tum.de/917142

Graphic from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) titled 'TUM science glossary – Catalysis.' The text explains that catalysis is a chemical process accelerated by a catalyst, which is not consumed or altered during the reaction and helps save time, energy, and costs. phys.org/news/2025-09-energy-e - "When the current method for producing something is estimated to consume a staggering 1–2% of the annual global energy supply, ...we need to make a change. The Haber-Bosch process produces ample amounts of #ammonia (NH3)—a valuable chemical compound that has a wide array of uses in fields such as agriculture, technology, and pharmaceuticals—while consuming a lot of #energy. ... A research team at #Tohoku University has made a significant contribution to an alternate method for converting harmful #nitrate #pollutants in #water into ammonia, addressing both environmental and energy challenges.... By utilizing NiCuFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) #catalysts, the study provides an efficient method for cleaning contaminated water. This means cleaner water, reduced pollution, and more sustainable fertilizer and energy resources, which are directly beneficial to public #health, #food security, and #climate protection."

🗓️ Our colleague Franziska Winter will give a lecture at the “Jahrestreffen Deutscher Katalytiker” in Weimar on March 12: In the session “Hydrogen Generation and Use”, she will take a look at #ammonia decomposition – in both conventional and directly electrically heated (ohmic) reactors. She is dealing with the development of electrically conductive cobalt-carbon #catalysts for use in ohmic reactors as well as the role of promoters for stability and catalytic activity.

fact of the day:

Every reaction, wether it's about breaking or forming bonds, requires some activation energy. That's basically the energy to pull that orbital of electrons towards another nucleus.

After those reach a certain maximum potential , when they are about to combine to another molecule or atom they will release it as kinetic energy, heat etc.

help by lowering the activation energy, because they by nature already detach or attach to things.

#Innovation in #Chemical Data ✨

@BuchlerGmbh improves their search for #chiral #catalysts by integrating ontology terms from RXNO framework with our terminology service.
This promotes the FAIR principles terminology.

We are 😀 to contribute to this.
