`The album contains three Taylor originals, three standards, and one standard-to-be, Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing," first recorded only four years before Taylor's version.`

Unit Structures is a studio album by American jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, released in October 1966 by Blue Note Records.

According to Jesse Jarnow of Pitchfork: "The album is by no means easy listening; the atonality is unrepentant. But Taylor’s septet finds numerous gorgeous spaces as they interpret “free jazz” not just as the freedom to improvise but the freedom to invent musical worlds and hidden syntaxes. The only way to tap into the 'rhythm-sound energy found in the amplitude of each time unit,' as Taylor wrote in the liner notes, is to listen reverently...
..."Unit Structures still challenges notions of musical freedom. Recorded during the same season that the psychedelic ballroom scene was starting to bubble in San Francisco, Unit Structures did more to disassemble music than nearly all of the light-show-drenched psychedelia that followed."

Air is an album by Cecil Taylor recorded for the Candid label in October 1960. The album features performances by Taylor with Archie Shepp, Buell Neidlinger, Denis Charles and Sunny Murray.

A review at AllMusic states: "Avant-garde icon Cecil Taylor has a superfluity of gems in his catalogue, but his recordings from the early 1960s have a special significance in that they represent the pianist's transition from a traditional post-bop approach to his more abstract stylings. Lyrical, bluesy, and driven by bold improvisation, 1960's Air is an excellent example of Taylor's early work. Along with saxophonist Archie Shepp (who sits in on two numbers) and a sharp, tight-knit rhythm section, Taylor can be heard stretching the jazz canvas of the era, forming the radical vocabulary he would master on landmark albums like 1966's Unit Structures.."

The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy is the third album by Steve Lacy and the first to be released on the Candid label in 1961. It features performances of tunes written by Thelonious Monk, Cecil Taylor, Miles Davis, by Lacy, Charles Davis, John Ore and Roy Haynes.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 5 stars stating "Some of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's most interesting recordings are his earliest ones. After spending periods of time playing with Dixieland groups and then with Cecil Taylor (which was quite a jump), Lacy made several recordings that displayed his love of Thelonious Monk's music plus his varied experiences...on three of the most difficult Monk tunes ("Introspection," "Played Twice," and "Criss Cross") plus two Cecil Taylor compositions and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee."

Jazztodon artist of the week: Cecil Taylor! "I’m more interested in the building of bridges right now. The idea of space, duration, and time can be found to be more intriguing in the making of a bridge. What is a bridge? it’s an analysis of the construction techniques. We are using time, structure, sight; the senses are all used. To look at a plan of a bridge is far more interesting to me than using a musical score. . . . I work with those forces that create the music, yet I don’t have much to do with it. The more you do it — trying to find the magic — you have much less ego, and you genuflect to the magic. And you work at it because that’s your responsibility."
