When a Red-tailed Hawk perched in a nearby pine tree for a few weeks the Cooper’s Hawks that were there disappeared. Once the RtH moved on the CHs returned & have been building a nest in the tree. Here’s my Perpetual Journal art of the RtH & Cedar Waxwings from ‘23.

The Cedar waxwing is a small, sleek bird with a distinctive black mask across its eyes and a soft crest on its head. It has a pale yellow belly and a gray-brown back, with bright yellow tips on its tail feathers. These birds are highly social and often seen in large flocks, flitting through trees and bushes in search of fruit. They are mostly found in northern North America, with many migrating southwards, towards and into, Central America for the winter. 1.5 Flash (Edited)

Plump, smooth-plumaged bird with distinctive thin, high-pitched call. Adults have a sleek crest, black mask, pale yellow wash on the belly, and yellow-tipped tail. Juveniles are drabber than adults, with coarse streaking on the breast and a reduced mask. Widespread and fairly common in open woodlands, orchards, and shrubby areas throughout most of North America. Winter range is variable and somewhat dependent on fruit crops; sometimes ventures as far south as Panama. Often gathers in large flocks, especially around fruiting trees. Compare with Bohemian Waxwing in the northern part of range; Cedar is smaller, browner, and has a white (not rufous) undertail.
