I'm genuinely excited about these #cellularIoT news, because it gives me real hope that the downsizing we went through last year could be the only one needed. It gives my colleagues and me a positive outlook for this year.

This is also a great announcement, because Wirepas has been working closely with Nordic Semiconductor to enable ultra-reliability and large-scale private networks at an affordable cost using the #nRF9x product family. DECT NR+ enables them to build large mesh networks that can serve use cases in #SmartMetering and #smartbuilding.

This is big news today from Nordic Semiconductor! The #nRF9151 is here, which is a drop-in replacement for the #nRF9161 and #nRF9160 (albeit with a 20% smaller footprint) with all the amazing features, but that adds Class 5 output power which even further reduces power-consumption.
This is a small lecture I gave to a team of students on how to approach designing the software architecture for a #cellularIoT project.
It uses the Nordic #nRF9160 as a habit tracker in a 12 sided enclosure and connects to AWS IoT.
In the talk I speak about:
- design considerations
- how to separate work between three teams
- make sure the project is aligned with the user's goals
- how end-to-end tests support integration between teams

My Manifest for creating amazing products for the Internet of Things:
Solutions must follow these principles, sorted by priority:
1. power-saving is used as much as possible in all operation states of the device
2. the least amount of data is sent to the cloud (optimize for message size)
3. data is encoded in a way that is most efficient for the device (optimize for computation cycles)
4. all computation that is done one the device must only be possible on the device
#AWS just cancelled an effort they were working on that would have made #IoT Core more optimized for ultra-low power devices. It's disappointing, but I have the theory that specifically #cellularIoT devices won't make them enough money. After all they charge for compute, storage and traffic, but very tiny devices are actually trying to avoid that as much as possible.
Yes, IoT deployments scale for millions of devices, but more so do cars and industrial PCs that can just stream in real time data.
#AWS #IoT now has support for #MQTT 5: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/iot/latest/developerguide/mqtt.html#mqtt5 ... most notably are
- reason codes (the connection will now return an error code on disconnect)
- Maximum Packet Size can now be specified
- topic aliases (use 8 byte integer to identify a topic instead of a string)
The last two are especially useful for #cellularIoT devices.
Adding #WiFi to #cellularIoT has been on the wishlist for many of #NordicSemiconductor's customers and starting today you can order the #nRF7002 Development Kit:
