My Cephalotus follicularis collection is thriving with a diverse range of pitcher forms and colors. From the striped patterns to solid greens, each variety shows the remarkable diversity within this unique Australian species. The Albany pitcher plant (Cephalotus follicularis) is the only species in its genus and produces these distinctive hairy pitchers that are perfectly adapted to catching small insects in its native southwestern Australian habitat.

My Cephalotus is growing new pitchers!
The fresh green traps are popping up between the older, darker ones. I love the contrast—this little Australian carnivore is always fascinating to watch.

Mijn Cephalotus maakt nieuwe vallen aan!
De frisse, groene vallen verschijnen tussen de oudere, donkerdere exemplaren. Ik hou van dat contrast—deze kleine Australische vleeseter blijft boeien.

The Australian Pitcherplant has the cutest little pitchers. It’s not closely related to Sarracenia (American Pitcherplants) or to Nepenthes (Tropical Pitcherplants), but instead to things like Oxalis (Wood Sorrel). These kind of insect-catching hollow leaves have evolved independently three times in the flowering plants.

Thumb-sized pitcher of an Australian Pitcherplant: like an upside down thimble with a lid jutting out from the back to prevent rain flooding the inside. The rim of the thimble is deeply grooved and there are three hairy strips running from the rim to the bottom of the pitcher. The lid is hairy and mottled with white patches and darker brown stripes

#cephalotus folicularis is carnivorous, and for all we know it is the only species of a family unrelated to the rest of carnivorous plants; it's been on its own evolutionary branch and figuring out by itself the pitcher plant tricks for at least 100 million years. Ants are a favorite snack.

Closeup of a group of unique carnivorous plants, with leaves that remind of shiny, slightly hairy saddlebags with their top gap shaped like an open mouth. They are dark red to purple (their color changes from green to deep purple depending on temperature and sunlight) and white inside. In the photo they are growing along with moss and moss flowers.

Love these hairy little guys (Cephalotus follicularis)

Finger-joint sized pitcherplant pitcher. The rim of the pitcher is strongly ribbed with inward pointing brown teeth, and the lid has clear patches to confuse insects. Hairy ribs run down from the rim to the base of the pitcher
