We were driving on the island of Crete when we spotted this closed up chapel right on the water’s edge. It’s not a Minotaur in the middle of a Labrynth, but it is still pretty cool.

Inside Frederiksborg Castle we first visited the chapel, which, owing to its mainly stone construction, survived an 1859 fire largely intact leaving most of it in its original, highly decorated form. Artwork was present on nearly every surface from the walls to ceilings to altar to pulpit and even the organ.

We're on the upper balcony level that surrounds an ornately decorated medieval chapel. It's a large space, rectangular in form, and we're looking from one of the front corners diagonally across and down towards the opposite rear corner. The flooring is tiled with large squares of grey and dusky pink but it's not a chequerboard effect, instead having each row of alternating colours just offset a little from the one before it so that the tiles appear to create jagged lines across the space. There are two columns of chairs set out in rows either side of a narrow aisle. Each column has around thirty rows of four, orange-padded seats. A small silver font or statue is below us, in front of the aisle. The chapel is very tall and this balcony level is about five metres up with arched openings between square, marble columns looking down below. Another five metres reaches the ceiling which is curved across its width down the length of the chapel. Every surface is highly decorated in artwork or gold trim.
