OLD HINSDALE/BRATTLEBORO BRIDGES
Mastodon Post

Facebook has become surprisingly busy with local posts. This one from the Hinsdale Police Department warns people off the old bridges and the island in between.

Does anyone know who Charles Dana was? WAY back in history, a Hinsdale businessman named Anderson Dana had a son, born in Hinsdale, named Charles Anderson Dana. The son's biography is quite involved. He is much remembered for one specific thing. Though he did not originate it, we are told, the phrase, "Windy City," a nickname for Chicago, is usually credited to him. It refers to overly talkative Chicago politicians and has nothing to do with weather conditions. As things go, we remember him for that and do not remember him for being the city editor for a pioneering and excellent newspaper, Horace Greeley's New-York Daily Tribune, for covering the 1848 French Revolution for the same paper, and for being a long-time editor of the New York Sun. Go figure. And while you're figuring, don't go on either of the old bridges.

The Dana Foundation was established by legislator and businessman Charles A. Dana and his wife Eleanor Naylor Dana in 1950 with initial grantmaking priorities in education, health, and welfare. Our first grant was awarded to Memorial Hospital for Treatment of Cancer, which set a course for a multi-decade commitment to cancer care, therapy, and research.
