Since the #EU #politicians seems not to really grasp the consequences of #ProtectEU (the new name of the #chatcontrol proposals) ... I will come with an extended proposal.
Hopefully the politicians can see the risks better.
As an extension to ProtectEU, we need to grant law enforcement agencies in Europe access to the GPS logs of all mobile phones and cars. In addition, all home owners will need to provide a separate set of keys to their homes to the law enforcement agencies in their residence country.
This will allow law agencies across all of Europe to investigate more freely and help fighting criminal activities and preparations for potential criminal actions much more efficiently. This will help us protect the citizens of EU more efficiently.
You think this sounds like a good idea? Because this is what the ProtectEU/ChatControl tries to achieve by injecting backdoors into encryption or enforcing client-side scanning of data.
Because these proposals (mine extension included) will not protect you if ...
- ... the current government changes and starts to persecute inhabitants. Like Russia has changed. Like the track USA is on nowadays; Just look at what happens in regards abortion and women scared of tracking menstrual cycles in apps. Or how they are scraping social media for potentially compromising information about immigrants - so they have reason for deportation.
- ... criminals gets hold of access keys law enforcement possesses. Can happen through unfaithful/disloyal people within law enforcement agencies, phishing attacks, data breaches in law enforcement infrastructure
- ... espionage by foreign states succeeds retrieving access to law enforcement infrastructure
If you are a politician who have a vote here - and you still think this is a good idea .... I'm sorry, but then you're too naïve and unfit sitting with this power.
Giving someone the possibility to possess information about anyone else is the ultimate honeypot which will be abused.
Like it's been said so many times before: «The road to hell is paved with good intentions».
