Got a new M4 MacBook Air for a personal laptop. The best part about it is getting to test my chezmoi dot files environment from scratch!

It was a lot of work to move to chezmoi, but it has been a huge life saver with all of its built-in templates and scripting. I've done so much that makes my life easier maintaining a shell environment across multiple devices.

I have different profiles for work, personal, and servers. It installs different apps or withholds secrets if need be.

The integration with 1Password is awesome as well. All of my secrets are store in 1P and chezmoi simply pulls them out on my personal systems.

OMB:
New article "Managing External Dependencies with #Chezmoi" published stoeps.de/posts/2025/managing_.

I use chezmoi for my dotfiles. To find out why and how to get started, check out my talk from Chemnitzer Linuxtage 2025 . Within chezmoi, you can use the file .chezmoiexternal.toml to download archives or git repositories during updates. This is particularly useful for managing external dependencies. Let me walk you through some common use cases.

#FOSS is really great. Today I "dived" into #chezmoi, which is really great when you have multiple machines.

Hey all. Looking for suggestions.

My dot file management sucks. I’d like suggestions from anyone for things like:

- Secret management (passwords in files, SSH keys, etc.)
- Good defaults for ignoring all the crap found in $HOME

I’m aware of #chezmoi but this looks OTT.

Recommendations welcome!

I want to avoid #homemanager and #nix for the same reasons as #chezmoi.

does anyone have a #chezmoi example with a working prompt option? i am trying to use prompts but {{- $email := promptStringOnce . "email" "Email Address" -}} from the example on the documentation always results in the $email variable being Email Address. There is no interactive prompt nor does it accept --promptString email=whatever@example.org

Ended up giving #chezmoi a shot for my #dotfile :bash: management since It has templates for different systems which makes my life a bit easier since I use different distros through out the house ( :arch: :gentoo: :fedora: :debian: )

My new favorite #Linuxgaming handheld computer:

- #Linux 6.1.52
- #KDE Plasma 5.27.5 (Really hope to see #Plasma6 later this year)
- 8 AMD Zen2 cores
- AMD Radeon integrated GPU

Just a normal PC, I can use, however I want, unlike most other Game handhelds/consoles, that are completely locked down. I can even install my own OS or multiboot it, if I want to.

It can even be connected to an external monitor and used with keyboard and mouse. Makes a decent workstation if needed.

I really like and appreciate that open and consumer friendly approach!

Next steps:

Getting my dotfiles and favorite CLI tools over there:

- #Fish shell 🐟
- #Distrobox
- #Atuin
- #Chezmoi
- #Starship

I migrated my system setup from #orgmode and #orgbabel to #chezmoi. Not a perfect fit, but there were some friction working on the configuration, and having some dotfiles as plain files makes some things easier.

Would have loved a better solution, but I need something which works on Windows too which limits the selection.

#Chezmoi: Manage Your Dotfiles Across Multiple #Linux Systems

My #dotfile "system" is a mess, so when kicking the wheels on #ubuntu #linux 24.04 I also tested the #chezmoi dotfile manager.

When installing chezmoi, a oneliner if you're not squeamish about curl | sh, you can also have it, say, install #ansible and run a playbook using prefixed script names (run_once, or run_onchange on future file changes). Very nice!

Yes, there are better bootstrapping tools, but sometimes you just want something quick and easy that does the job.

How do you test your #ChezMoi configuration on a bare OS? Docker? Distrobox? Vagrant?
