In other news - when chipping #buckthorn branches, those things really fight back. My forearms are very well scratched up.

That weed of a tree grows branches at crazy angles and they're always grabbing at you, hoping to kill you for fertilizer.

interestingly though, I found the wood to be rather nice for carving - though you don't often have a piece big enough to do much with.

Here is the latest folding spoon that i have made for a costumer. its made out of cherry wood. I absolutely love how the chipcarved pattern turned out, i will definetly do a similar pattern in the future. I usually sketch out a small part of the pattern in advance and then the rest of the pattern is allowed to grow out of the sketch when I carve.

This was a commisoned pice. a spoon like this one would cost about 4000 SEK. Its takes about three days of fulltime work to make a spoon like this.

A distaff I've made for an upcoming exhibition. The pattern is built up of circles and sections of circles and I more or less started at the bottom filling the space and figured out the next segment as I went. Very nice to work with a pair of compasses and just trust it completely. The circle is law and you just need to adapt and find ways to make it fit in the given area.

Twelve years ago I started to make these eight sided shrinkpots for the museum shop of Sörmlands museum. The design is more or less a copy of an old one from the museums collections and I truly love the raw simplicity of the square pattern.
Working on a new batch that will hopefully be ready during the summer.

This is the smallest pot I've made for a long time and I did not fully realise how specific my usual method is for a certain minimum size of pot. Had to a adapt and rethink a whole lot of stuff to make the work go smoothly. Quite a healthy experience I believe.

Here is a heddle called "Sommar". I made the heddle in birch and painted it with linseed oil paint.

This heddle was a side project for almost a year and it feelt good to finally have it finished, the mountain of unfinished items is shrinking or maybe not🤔

This is a rigid heddle that i made. it´s a tool for weaving bands. I have carved it from a solid piece of alder wood and painted it with paint that i made from raw pigments and linseed oil.

One of my favourite things about #chipcarving is that the mess is so much less than with most other forms of carving. I can carve all day long and fit the scraps in my hand. This project was about 2.5 hours including the layout and painting. 🪆🗝️

A basswood (tilia) blank, pre-cut into a slightly rounded triangle. I buy them from MyChipcarving.com. They’re not a sponsor or anything, just a company that I’ve been doing business with for over a decade.

The finished carving. The design is my own- I don’t mind if you copy it for yourself, but copying it for commercial use without asking would be a dick move. The stippling is done by hand with a reshaped 6 penny nail to conceal irregularities. The berries are shaped with a leather stamp.

The entire pile of debitage- approximately a tablespoon.

The piece after painting. I use acrylics cut with water to wash over the wood and colour it without hiding the grain. Only the red for the berries is applied full strength to suggest the vibrance of real Holly berries.

A little project this morning, taking shape for an Xmas gift. Feed me!

I was fascinated to learn the weedy, problem tree/shrub, #buckthorn is a hardwood. It grows so fast and is so ornery, I won't have any hesitation to cut it back for #carving projects in future.
