@arstechnica I think the Nvidia CEO is purposely setting expectations in favor of his company. TSMC and Intel are building fabs in the US and it won't take 20 years. It is more like 2 to 5 years, but we also need more college grads to get the skills required to operate these fabs to achieve true independence. One of the things that doesn't get mentioned much about the #COVID #ChipShortage is how long leadtimes have gotten. If you recently got a #ploopy product, it probably contains parts ordered in 2021 or even 2020.
The discourse on the topic often makes it feel like an Inevitable Law of the Universe, but my experience is that there are (some) companies who have discovered they can treat their customers poorly and get away with it. And they've chosen to just...keep doing that.

I mean: Why should my kitchen & household appliances need CPUs? Are "smart" devices overpowered? How many chips does the average consumer throw away per year?
