I literally just saw a cicada trip over an ant on my back patio. 😂

I don't know why that's so funny to me right now, but it is!

There's a dying cicada that managed to get inside today and I haven't been able to find it, but once every hour or two it makes unbelievably loud Predator noises and startles the fuck out of me. RIP my sleep tonight!

Today's comes to us from the Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, KY - it's a periodical (one of the three 17-year species in genus Magicicada) molting from its nymph shell as an adult. They're only found in North America.

On my way down the mountain in a hot humid summer evening, I saw and heard a cicada singing against the sunset. After I took the shot, it stopped singing, slowly moved toward the dark side of the tree trunk and then began singing again.

It’s #cicada time again.

“Hey, did you do an interview for Smithsonian?”
“Maybe? What does it say?”
“‘It’s sex, drugs, and zombies!’”

“Oh, ah, uh yep!”

Reposting an oldie

I've moved away from using gouache in this very thick, opaque way, but the colors really are nice to look at

We have had a couple of larger cycles of #Cicada broods coming out here in Arlington over the past few years. COVID gave us time to look at the #Bugs better. Alrington, Virginia USA 2021
A close-up shot shows a cicada shedding its exoskeleton on the side of a tree. The tree's bark is textured and dark gray. The cicada's shed exoskeleton is a light brown color, and the cicada itself is pale yellow with translucent wings. The cicada is clinging to the side of the tree. In the background, there is a blurry view of a white pickup truck. The overall scene is outdoors, with some green grass and trees visible in the distance.
