Ten years ago, I was a pole dancer. Here I’m doing a jade split from a spin climb. There’s a reason that loud music is played during pole routines. All that squeaking is my skin pulling against the metal. And yes, it hurts. But you get used to it after a while. #PoleDance #throwback #IndigenousCreatives #CircusArts #gymnastics

Lyra love affair. Happy circus Valentine's Day!

I'm primarily a trapeze girlie, but I started on lyra and want to cross train/develop acts with multiple options.

Me: Ugh, I am so weak.
Also me: Let's do flag multiple times, for fun!

Four years ago, I got to try out a Cyr wheel for the first time. It was all very counterintuitive for me as my background is in aerial work where all my grip is about pulling. I had to push this wheel away from me, instead. Let’s just say I had zero natural facility with the device. I’m glad I got one picture of me on the thing! #CyrWheel #Circus #CircusArts #hoop

I am standing within a huge hoop, gripping the hoop with clenched fists and bent and tensed knees, looking like an awkward Vitruvian Man.

"As an usher, she felt too exposed to the many Nazis who showed interest in her, so she started working as a lion tamer, which felt safer to her."

If anyone was wondering what was going on with the Ukrainian circus students who fled to Hungary at the beginning of the war - I was! -, they are still in Hungary and this is a video about them. (Hungarian only, with some Russian subtitled into Hungarian.)

performers in Eiffel Tower formation, L’Exposition de Paris, 1878.

A group of circus performers re-create the Eiffel Tower in front of a orange and blue arch backdrop. Two French clowns in polka-dot costumes with ruffled collars and comically small hats form the tower base, holding a small performer (either a child or an adult little person) between them. The three are straddled by a male-presenting acrobat in a horizontally rainbow-striped leotard, who,in turn, supports a second male-presenting acrobat in a yellow leotard, holding a medicine ball above his head. The overall presentation forms the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower.

Anything we can do, performer Madame Yucca could do “genteel in the costume of the parlor” - not backwards, but undoubtedly in heels (and definitely in a serious corset!) (c. 1898)

A Forepaugh and Slees Circus poster featuring a series of vignettes showing strongwoman Yucca (civilian name Mary Carson,a muscular-armed European woman wearing an elegant black dress and opera gloves, performing feats of strength including lifting animals, people and furniture, and, in one case, supporting an anvil using only the strength of her jaw.The background of this image is yellow, and several highlighted props are red.
