How can we break this vicious cycle of #ClimateCrisis, economic crisis and #war? Clearly a major concern for those working at the intersection of #research and #activism, this question was the focus of #PluriverseOfPeace The BG #conference brought together researchers, #artists, and activists from over 25 countries. The goal was to explore the convergence of #peace and environmental struggles. Check out the videos here: berlinergazette.de/pluriverse-

3. "The #climatecrisis supercharged the deadly storms that killed >1,750 people in Asia by making downpours more intense and flooding worse. Monsoons often bring flooding but scientists were clear: this was 'not normal'."

*Not normal* is the new normal.

So I guess Seattle, south of here, is going through some stuff. This atmospheric river is a nasty piece of weather. It's happening here too, but not anything as bad as there. We had wet snow last night that coated everything, then heavy rain just at the freezing temp so the snow stayed on the trees then broke them. Power was out for 8 hours today. This is why I prep. Genny going for the freezers and fridge, 15 gallons of gas in storage for the generator, campstove going, pantry full of food, wood stove as usual. Power is on now and all is well but the rain has been pounding down the whole day. My chickens are outraged, everything is mud. I spent a half an hour looking for the electric fence ground-out while collecting eggs and topping up their feed. Got the fence going again finally. I really hope it dries out for a few days before the deep cold sets in next week.

Extreme rainfall events are becoming more frequent because of burning fossil fuels (like fracked gas exported as LNG). Maybe time to get serious about climate action in BC? (Are the repairs from the 2021 atmospheric river finished yet?) #bcpoli #climatecrisis #Sumas

"Looming climate doomsday demands creativity, ambition, and societal transformation

Eighty years after the founding of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and 55 years after the first Earth Day, humanity faces a growing profusion of existential threats. Most people—including politicians, business executives, and the financial institutions responsible for continued reliance on fossil fuels—know that climate change is a problem, and that it’s caused by human activities. But global leaders are floundering at the helm, and an informed populace hasn’t risen to the challenge."

"The housing crisis is forcing Americans to choose between affordability and safety

Climate change is reshaping who gets to live where – and who gets left behind when the next disaster strikes

Picture this: You’re looking to buy a place to live, and you have two options.

Option A is a beautiful home in California near good schools and job opportunities. But it goes for nearly a million dollars – the median California home sells for $906,500 – and you’d be paying a mortgage that’s risen 82% since January 2020.

Option B is a similar home in Texas, where the median home costs less than half as much: just $353,700. The catch? Option B sits in an area with significant hurricane and flood risk.

As a professor of urban planning, I know this isn’t just a hypothetical scenario. It’s the impossible choice millions of Americans face every day as the U.S. housing crisis collides with climate change. And we’re not handling it well."

Carney ran on an #ElbowsUp campaign, but since the election "he has capitulated on pretty much every front" and is "completely trashing Canada’s climate commitments".

#Queensland parliament has voted to kill its legislated #renewables targets, despite a last-minute attempt to rename it the “Propping Up #Coal and Delaying Renewables Amendment Act 2025”.

The bill also repeals a development approval for a #windfarm near #Gympie, the Forest windfarm. It replaces Labor’s targets with the #LNP’s energy policy, which would extend the operation of the state’s government-owned coal generators past their planned closure dates.

Maiwar MP #MichaelBerkman moved amendments to rename the bill, saying the government was “pouring literally billions of dollars into propping up ageing coal-fired #powerstations, keeping them on life support potentially beyond 2050”:

“The LNP is pitching their roadmap as pragmatism but I am pretty sure pouring billions more taxpayer dollars into keeping ageing #coalfiredpowerstations open for longer while delaying the #transition to renewable energy is not pragmatism, it is plain stupidity.”

During debate, assistant minister #BrysonHead [Dick to those who know him] told the parliament that he loved coal and accused #Labor and the #Greens of “propping up renewables”.

“The beauty about our plan is that the cheapest form of power will ultimately win … the beauty about a free market is that the cheapest and best value good always wins,” he said.

Berkman’s amendment was shot down and the bill passed just before 9.30pm, both on party lines.
