A monkey grasping at fruit — symbol of upādāna (clinging). In this image, generated by DALL•e and inspired by the aesthetic of classical Japanese emakimono, a monkey stretches toward a piece of fruit that remains just beyond its grasp. The motif allegorically represents upādāna, the ninth link in the chain of dependent origination (paṭicca-samuppāda) in Buddhist philosophy. upādāna, translated as clinging, grasping, or appropriation, is the mental act of attaching to objects, identities, or experiences under the illusion that they can provide lasting satisfaction. The monkey — traditionally a symbol of the restless and desirous mind in Buddhism — embodies this futile pursuit, suspended in a moment of tension between craving and attainment. The fruit, vivid and seemingly attainable, signifies the transient pleasures that sustain saṃsāra, the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Source: Created with DALL•E.

It is our individual and collective propensity to seek comfort, familiar patterns, and fear of the unknown that prevents us from fully engaging in the potential generated by the constant change that is in front of us.
Clinging, and fear will not prevent change or the movement of time. They will only rob us of the possibilities they offer.

In today's post, you can join me in walking a muddy road, starting from coastal Oregon all the way to a timeless and captivating Zen story shedding light on the struggle of clinging, the ease of letting go, and how compassionate engagement fits into all that.

#toddler was feeling under the weather today and the mental drain it had cannot be understated. The #crying, the #clinging, hearing his voice hoarse from coughing…was enough to send me over the edge to tears a few times today (mainly bc I couldn’t do much to improve things). Today I realized why so many #moms step back from work these first few years of #parenthood. Doing them both well is nearly impossible, unless you’ve got help.

The last #Storm of #Autumn,
or the first of #Winter,
has strewed the #Bosom of the #Earth with the few #Leaves
that were still #Clinging to the sapless #Branches.

Now all stand #Bare once more,
