Want To Know More About Denton, Texas?

Denton, Texas, established in 1857 as the seat of Denton County in north-central Texas, emerged from the Peters Colony land grant of 1841, which spurred Anglo settlement amid frontier ranching and subsistence farming on vast prairies once grazed by figures like John S. Chisum. Named for frontiersman John B. Denton, killed in a 1841 skirmish, the city grew modestly post-Civil War—readmitted to the Union in 1870 with just 361 residents—before rail connections in 1881 doubled its population to over 2,500 by 1890, fostering trade and agriculture. By the early 20th century, educational institutions defined its identity: the University of North Texas (1890), Texas Woman’s University (1901), and North Central Texas College (1924), transforming Denton into a vibrant college town 35 miles northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth, with over 50,000 students enriching its cultural scene through music festivals, the annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo since 1928, and the longest-running documentary film festival in Texas. Today, as of October 2025, Denton’s population exceeds 150,000, bolstered by suburban expansion in the DFW metroplex; its economy thrives on education, manufacturing (home to Peterbilt Motors and Jostens), and emerging tech, including a new 200,000-square-foot STULZ Air Technology plant opening late this year to add 200 jobs. The revitalized downtown square, anchored by the historic 1896 courthouse-museum, blends preserved Victorian architecture with eclectic shops, restaurants, and events like the Holiday Lighting Festival, while regional coordination via the North Central Texas Council of Governments addresses growth challenges; politically, the once solidly Republican city has trended more competitive with demographic diversification.

Shoes that students threw up on a powerline in Collegetown

A powerline consisting of two black wires wound around a spiral cable has about five pairs of shoes wrapped around it

Orange Tiger Lily (𝐿𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚) that I also saw in a Collegetown garden

Mostly orange flower with six petals that are reddish-orange on the outside but yellow at the center with lines running radially and six stamen with yellow pollen on the ends sticking out of the center, behind it are blurred out shapes that look like green plants and fallen leaves

A Panicile Hydrangea I saw in a garden in Collegetown

A big cluster of purple flowers fills much of the right side of the frame which is mostly dark, below it are some green leaves with a lot of texture, particularly dark gren lines, a cluster of white flowers is out of focus far away and to the left as well as more leaves

Last Monday I parked on Linden Ave and walked up to the campus and saw an something amazing at end of an little alley behind the Breazzano Center so I went to the end of it and got this shot

In the center of the frame a large crane with a yellow space frame mast and boom looks smaller than it really is with the boom pointing towards the lower right with the hook halfway down, to the left there is a beige building in dark shade close to us, at the upper right another building close to us sticks up in a sharp corner also in the shade, and towards the bottom a distance row of brick and pastel buildings is brightly lit and there is roughly a triangle of blue sky in the middle.

The other kind of crane always flies away when I show up but this one is working in Collegetown building a new building called 'The Ivy' at the intersection of College and Dryden

A yellow crane rises vertically straight up with a space frame beam supporting a cross beam long in towards the left and with a counterweight towards the right, above a blue sky mostly obscured by a huge cumulus cloud, in the bottom right the very tops of a few buildings are in front of or behind the crane.

The Student Agency building is the first thing if you head out of Cornell towards Collegtown -- tomorrow I'm hoping to post some photos of a big yellow crane that just went up in this neighborhood but I've got to get through photos of my trip to Newark Valley and Oakley Corners State Forest first

A 7 story or so broad building had brown bricks at the the top and a sign that reads THE STUDENT AGENCY BUILDING, below that the front has a glass facade that reflects a sky with clouds and towards your right, a red brick facade. In front find a Hertz rental van, a garden of brownish green (color graded) foliage and a road. Above: a subdued (color graded) blue sky with a few clouds, Behind: other buildings a little less tall and some parked cars.

Row of townhouse apartments at the Maplewood complex on Veterans Place Rd, Ithaca NY

9 crenelations of a long apartment buildings go from the distance in the far left off the right side of the frame, most of these are yellow but some are grey, some look like they're made of brick, others look like wood siding, there are always three rows of windows but the designs are mixed up to keep it interesting, close cropped grass is in front, one tree is visible behind the building and one big cumulus cloud in blue sky

Another angle of the electric box at the intersection of Dryden and Ithaca Roads in Collegetown -- Ithaca has a program to decorate these boxes [1], I should 'catch them all', shouldn't I?

[1] ithaca.com/news/public-art-com

Decorated electric box seen from the long side, at the very top there is a brown stripe with 4 rows of white L marks, then a field of Sakura petals with a small QR code in the corner then a section of brown background, though both sounds are surrounded by tree trunks wrapped in spirals, there's a sign for a nekobus stop and a big totoro character standing in a big pile of fallen sakura petals and below some panels of symbolic characters and a little image of a similar but smaller electric box I think

Graffiti of a cat smoking in Collegetown

A red line grafiti of a cat with a caret for a nose and two x's on its forhead sitting on a sofa and smoking something with dabs of red paint rising as smoke, above it is a circular object (bell? air vent?) with a sticker and several grafiti drawn in different colors on it

You can see maples lighting up the landscape with tiny flowers on the far hill I took when I was looking for sakura in Collegetown and replenishing my lunch supplies; I had an office in the beige building on the left when the information science department first moved in; the buildings on the right are new

We're looking down a street with the double yellow line starting a bit left of center and converging into the distance where we can see at least one car driving in the far distance. On both sides there are sidewalks with trees, behind them buildings that are about four or five stories high, beige on the left, bolder shades of red and green to the right, and the very far distance a hillside with mostly brown/grey winter phase trees but a few lit up with tiny green flowers.

Dear the Cute Scrawny College Kid At My Gym,

Look, with that much chest acne we both know what you're doing, ok? But here's the thing: you actually have to EAT to build muscle. The protein isn't at the bottom of that syringe, Bailey. Go get yourself a steak and cheese or some bean burritos, otherwise you're just wasting your money.

To your Gainz,
Jim

ME: (walking to coffee shop on a silent street with no traffic) The city has been so *quiet*, I'm starting to miss the college kids. I wonder when move-in weekend is?

ME: Heh, probably, we only have a couple more weeks to enjoy this before it turns back to chaos and bedlam around here.

ME: ...come to think of it, it's August already.

ALSO ME: Wait... what day is it?

STILL ME: (panicked) WHAT'S TODAY'S DATE?!

(riff from 'Psycho' plays)
