The lab’s potential closure comes at a tough time for #bees.
Droege studies native bees, the types of #pollinators that only live in the #wild, as opposed to #honeybees, which are farmed & bred for profit. Entomologists stress that honeybees & native bees are different — sort of like farmed chickens & wild birds. But they can be exposed to the same threats, & there are signs that both are in trouble.

Despite having a pollinator garden, I have seen no pollinators for a couple of weeks. Normally, my flowers would be crawling with bees, wasps, and butterflies. Now there is nothing. This worries me. I haven’t seen nearly as many pollinators in my garden this year as I did last year. I haven’t seen any green sweat bees. Last year, the flowers in my garden were covered by honeybees. Now I’ve only seen a few. Not many bumblebees, either. I have seen lawns with pesticide warning signs in the city, though.
