I can't stop reading about it, lol. These people might have barely left the planet's surface for 5 minutes, but they sure do live in a parallel universe ideal for brand deals and pageview$. The #commodon article I won't write but would 1000% read:

"'GRWM to fly to the stars!': A comparative televisual study of Apollo 11 and Blue Origin aesthetics"

"There are several overlapping groups of people who, probably for different reasons, are more likely to prefer news that shares their point of view:
(a) the ideological and politically engaged;
(b) young people, especially those who rely mainly on social media for news;
(c) women; and
(d) less socioeconomically advantaged groups."

"In markets dominated by fewer brands — often publicly funded ones such as the BBC — respondents in that market also tend to express higher levels of preference for impartiality." In Britain, where respondents use an average of four news brands, the lowest number across the 40 countries studied, 62% of respondents say they prefer news displaying no point of view.

U.S. media history is pretty straightforward, honestly.

#mediaStudies #commodon @communicationscholars

The text reads "At the behest of corporations and trade groups touting its tremendous potential for education, development, and social uplift, regulators cleared the way for radio, only for it to become another aggressive marketing channel predicated on the sale of useless crap."

The word "radio" is crossed out and replaced by the word "cable," which is crossed out and replaced with the words "online services," and so on with "the commercial internet," and "mobile internet" crossed out as well. Beneath all the text that's been struck through is the latest iteration: "generative AI?"

"The chapters, constructed as 'multispecies stories,' ... consider ecologies & infrastructure together in novel ways that challenge our conceptual separations between the two. Readers will find a theoretically exciting & vibrantly composed read with OIL BEACH" 🛢️🏖️📙

Of the many directions one's thoughts could take in listening to this, I'm thinking most of Andrew McStay's book, "Emotional AI." Quick thread… 1/8

This study is particularly relevant in light of the current wave of traditionalist radicalism.

'I don’t think an opinion adhering to institutional conventions can be considered an “unpopular take.” Positioning it as unpopular masks a common opinion as marginalised. This type of perception skewing is reminiscent of Christian conservatives claiming God-fearing values are under attack despite Christianity dominating every echelon of American society.'

Publication alert! Actually it's a review, of Bootlegging the Airwaves: Alternative Histories of Radio and Television Distribution by Eleanor Patterson, in Technology and Culture

Good book for folks in media studies, fan studies, distribution studies, also Star Trek & wrestling fans?

@commodon

muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/article/951

#Commodon

Patterson’s conclusion that bootleggers’ “embodied distributive labor”
parallels work done within media industries has wider significance (pp.
150–51). In arguing that the fans’ activities are distributive labor, her book
makes a persuasive case for foregrounding distribution; for looking for it in alternative, extra-industry spaces; and for thinking about alternative spaces alongside industry. Bootlegging the Airwaves provides an excellent example of what distribution studies can offer for technology studies and beyond.
