Her paternal grandfather, Juan Sánchez de Toledo, was a converso—a Jew who had converted to Christianity and later did public penance under the Inquisition. Teresa never denied this ancestry and it deepened her awareness of God’s grace and her own humility.

Yesterday, rushing around in the rain doing life admin, lost in an unfamiliar area, I was struck by the variety of wonderfully kind people who gave me clear, concise and funny responses to questions only truly local people would know the answers to.
eg. short cuts, best places to go, things to avoid, etc.

One tall man stood in a mysteriously long coat reading a thick hard-back book in a rainy parking lot. His directions provided the best and most entertaining visuals. Probably a novelist.

Benefit of living in a small-ish city: when your dog makes a break for freedom because the back gate mysteriously opens, a friendly local has not only caught her, but brought her back to the gate before you've even run out to chase her. (bc all the local kids know where she lives, and while one came to the front to tell us she was escaping, the others were informing the kind stranger where to bring her! )

If you want to know why the the world does not implode despite some pretty crazy stuff that’s going on, I have a hunch that it has to do with people like Sr. Joan.
I’ve known her since the mid 1970s when I was a kid visiting the Daughters of St Paul trying to figure out whether or not to join. She seemed both venerable and yet youthful in her late 40s then. Now well into her 90s she’s one of our oldest members in the province—and yet she’s the youngest of the senior sisters.  I like to pray my hour of adoration right after breakfast, and I always find her in the chapel. If she thinks she’s alone, she’ll just be audibly talking with Jesus, or saying the rosary. I tried to catch it on video this morning, but she was too far away and the sound didn’t pick up on my phone.

Unless, of course, you’re not a morning person (hi! 👋 that would be me!).
Convent morning starts early. Sisters and nuns typically pray quite a bit in the morning before and after Daily Mass. And while I love the quiet time in the morning spent with God—I’m just not *awake* until mid-morning.
