The martial arts community I launched on May 21, 2001 turned 24 years old today.

Last year, we completed a multi-year migration to move the community from old software that was slowly breaking to modern community software that would ensure the community could last 30, 40, 50 years. @chrispian worked a lot on this, with an assist from @mattmecham and crew.

Dear community managers - today we officially release our Handbook, dedicated to prevention of CSA in online spaces.

orchard.androcross.nl/resource

We want to encourage administrators and users alike to read it.

Have feedback? Send an e-mail at orchard@androcross.nl -- keep in mind we will be unable to reply to your input on Fediverse.

We acknowledge this is not a 100% complete guide and it may omit some topics; they will be addressed in the future.

Me: sets up a virtual coffee for people to come ask questions about OSS stuff

Person: *shows up 15 minutes in and says "Hello"*

Me: *startled AF, shrieks, knocks things over*
"OMG I'm so sorry, I'd forgotten I'm in a Zoom, hi."

A handbook guide for community managers is on its way.

Deriving from experiences on both federated and centralized networks, the handbook's purpose is to help moderators and community leaders recognize signs of child sexual abuse and identify potential threats.

We aim to shed light on symbols and dogwhistles used by offenders, as these often go under the radar of most moderators, as well as ways to identify potential victims in spaces.

“Section 230 protects any person or any entity that publishes other people’s content online. That is pretty much every person and entity that I know. There’s nothing in its language that limits it to Big Tech. I actually hear this a lot from my friends in the legacy news media community who feel like Big Tech got this statutory advantage that they don’t have. ...

This goofy comment showed up on a LinkedIn post I made criticizing some researchers that had deployed AI bots into a community without permission.

I read it, and it was odd. It seemed kind of like a summary of some of my points, spun around in a blender. I thought it might be AI, so I Googled the name and the first hit was some company calling this an "AI Agent" for "business development."

A comment from Weston Racterson: The ethics here are clear as mud. Academic research needs oversight, but let's be honest - Reddit was bult on fake accounts from day one. The real issue isn't AI vs. human deception, it's consent. No one signed up to be lab rats in someone's dissertation experiment.

Like thousands of others, I am now a minority owner of the Oakland Ballers, an independent pro baseball team, after participating in their recent Community Investment Round.

In purchasing these "fan shares," you are taking an actual, tiny stake in the team, alongside the majority owners and folks like Billie Joe Armstrong, Too $hort, Alex Winter, and Chelsea Peretti.

I've finally set aside time for my personal website and blog project about , , + Advocacy, , and obviously the as a whole.

Because I don't want to launch without content, what kind of articles and resources would you like to see?

Title: Community Management 101
Key takeaways:
- what is (and isn't) CM work
- how to become a CM
- quick lessons for devs that can't afford a dedicated CM yet

What questions would you have as an audience?

@lemeteore Usually, open-source maintainers are good developers. They are, however, not good at and probably not interested in community cat herding. I am not surprised, to see some of them looking for mitigations to being overwhelmed.

Are there people out there loving the interaction and are able to distill community chatter in something a developer can act upon? If so, step up and offer your services to an open-source project out there.

And a call to maintainers. It is OK to not like or be good at community management. Put the word out and look out for people who can help you in that regard.

Action figure trend. Here you go. COPPA-compliant.

A hand drawn illustration by Patrick. It is meant to be the packaging for an action figure of Patrick. "Patrick O'Keefe" is at the top, with callouts for "Community + Product" and "New." There is a simple drawing of Patrick, with 5 items: Policy, represented by a binder with "Community Guidelines" on the front. Bonus Sunglasses. Patience, represented by an hourglass. Spreadsheets, represented by a 7x7 block of spreadsheets with blue columns. Water/Coffee, represented by a brown mug. At the bottom, it says: "COPPA-compliant action figure." It includes "Quote #98," which is: "The first question you should ask any community software vendor is: 'How easy is it for me to leave you?'"

Now that I’ve had a chance to recharge and refocus, I’m officially exploring my next opportunity! I’m looking for a remote, UK-based role in Community Management or DevRel Leadership—where I can keep building impactful, developer-focused communities. DMs are open!

A fake forum thread starts with a post by Patrick, with a link to a forum post that violates the community guidelines as advertising. A private message has been sent to the member. The removed post reads: "This post is relevant to this community! Do not delete it! I'm here to tell you about the only app you'll ever need, so you'll be able to leave this community and never return. Check it out now!" The fake forum thread continues with a post by Patrick, with the reply by the member, JamesO, which reads: "Patrick, I can't believe you deleted my post! What a megalomaniac prick you are! Hitler would be proud of the work you are doing!" Patrick has banned the member. Next, we have a reply from Jeffrey Goldberg: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic. Why have I been added to your community moderation documentation system?"
Once again, we have the fake forum thread post by Jeffrey Goldberg: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic: "Hi, this is Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief at The Atlantic. Why have I been added to your community moderation documentation system?" Finally, we have a post by Patrick: "Uh... you must have just gotten sucked in here. :-?".
