Compassion Fatigue is a real occupational hazard. It's the toll of constant empathy. Check your emotional bandwidth daily—your clients need you well, not worn down. Prioritize restorative breaks. 🔋

The Weight of the World and the Dread That Never Ends

I hate that phrase — crashing out. It’s a bit cringe, I know. But lately, honestly, that’s the best way I can describe how I’ve been feeling. Like I’ve been slowly crashing the fuck out. My energy, my focus, my optimism — all of it. Just crashing. It’s like the world’s gotten so heavy that I can’t carry it anymore, but somehow I still try. And it’s not even just one thing causing it. It’s everything. It’s the state of the world, the country, the chaos that never seems […]

"For the Witches with Empathy Burnout", this is some great advice from Kelly-Ann Maddox

youtube.com/watch?v=b-cm3QbL7E

I learned a new term from it: compassion fatigue. It describes a state of mind in which you can no longer empathically react to all the problems, either your own or of the world, because you can't take it anymore. This often leads to cynicism or other coping strategies (which may not be helpful).

You remember the appointments.
The prescriptions.
The comforting words when no one else knows what to say.

But who checks on you?

This is for the support person who holds everyone else together… while quietly falling apart. You’re not invisible. You’re not alone and you deserve care too.

While you are out there worried about anarchists, here's what your fucked up system is doing. Imagine asking for the state to snatch more kids:

Every three days, a child who has been involved with Ontario’s care system dies.

That’s according to provincial data obtained by Global News using freedom of information laws that tracked the deaths of 354 children between 2020 and 2022 who were under the care of the government in some form.

A third of those deaths were listed as having "cause unknown".

So in my timeline today we have the makings of potential #CompassionFatigue and people who apparently would prefer to deal with grumpy attitudes rather than niceness or something. Alright I think I'm following along. Not sure if I should go back to finishing my work for the day or go and sit outside and enjoy the breeze.

I highly recommend all of Martha's groups, and this one strikes me as especially significant, as I hear the stories of therapist and coach burnout lately ...

I am not expecting the world to curate my content for me. I can and do filter lots of things. However, I cannot write a filter that will prevent me from being haunted for days by really well worded emotionally distressing factual content on which I cannot take action. It happens over and over here. I tried to summarize the examples that have crossed my feed just this week and just decided not to. Yes, it would have been viscerally demonstrative but also you don't need that in your head. And really, what exactly do we think we're doing here when we write or boost emotive content that provokes distress you can't relieve? Who is this communication helping? Who is this hurting? I have few followers and a small voice , but hear me, people #compassionfatigue is real and it fosters immobility and despair. Telling people to #filter for what bothers them is insufficient. We all need to personally and individually consider not just whether we found something we saw meaningful but whether it serves an empowering agenda or drags people down into the mire overwhelmed by feelings. While yes, someone might flood the world with this kind of content to try and foster political or social inaction on a large scale, no one I follow is likely posting or boosting these kinds of sad facts about human behavior and its consequences with that sort of agenda. I do seriously wonder what the hell they think they're doing, though.
