I am not expecting the world to curate my content for me. I can and do filter lots of things. However, I cannot write a filter that will prevent me from being haunted for days by really well worded emotionally distressing factual content on which I cannot take action. It happens over and over here. I tried to summarize the examples that have crossed my feed just this week and just decided not to. Yes, it would have been viscerally demonstrative but also you don't need that in your head. And really, what exactly do we think we're doing here when we write or boost emotive content that provokes distress you can't relieve? Who is this communication helping? Who is this hurting? I have few followers and a small voice , but hear me, people #compassionfatigue is real and it fosters immobility and despair. Telling people to #filter for what bothers them is insufficient. We all need to personally and individually consider not just whether we found something we saw meaningful but whether it serves an empowering agenda or drags people down into the mire overwhelmed by feelings. While yes, someone might flood the world with this kind of content to try and foster political or social inaction on a large scale, no one I follow is likely posting or boosting these kinds of sad facts about human behavior and its consequences with that sort of agenda. I do seriously wonder what the hell they think they're doing, though.
