As well as the home made compost I also have a bin of Korean Natural Farming IMO4 inside the shed, a worm bin at home in the garage and a bokashi bin to take any unwanted cooked food waste. And there’s a pile of leaf litter turning slowly into leaf mould.
Composting can happen in many guises. I wish more people embraced it in their own lives. We live in an exceptionally wasteful world fast losing our natural biodiversity. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #SoilHealth #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk
@Broadfork Thank you for sharing all the different December compost. And your plan is to use the very best of the compost for the soil blocks for starts. The Mastodon composting enthusiasts inspired us to get buckets of compost inside before it’s frozen. This will be our third winter of this step and our second season using soil blocks for the vegetable starts. Thanks all. #compost, #nodig, #minnesota.
This is my composting set up over winter. We are fortunate our winters are mild. The piles are unlikely to freeze.
The two palleted compost bays have been freshly turned.
Four compost Daleks contain maturing compost.
Another compost dalek recieves the weekly veg peelings and garden weeds with sawdust added over the top.
After taking the photos all the compost was covered or lids put back on to keep the rain off. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #Mulch #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk
[Thread] So, hubby did some research and discovered that an odious #SiliconValley group [#OpenPhilanthropy] has been bashing #Hannaford. While #HannafordSupermarkets aren't perfect, they are very inclusive and welcoming to #GBLTQ folks, donate #Food to #FoodBanks, and make sure any #FoodWaste becomes #compost or #AgroEnergy.
"Open Philanthropy, previously called the #OpenPhilanthropyProject, is a left-of-center funding group founded in 2016 by political donor #CariTuna and Facebook co-founder #DustinMoskovitz. It is the sister fundraising organization of the Open Philanthropy Action Fund (#OPAF), a nonprofit advocacy group.
The similarly named Open Philanthropy Project Fund (#OPPF) is a donor-advised fund associated with the Open Philanthropy Project and hosted by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation."

@JimmyB As far as I can see it’s being run by Soilsmiths who are part of TI Soil Ecology Lab.
I saw the YouTube clip yesterday about their Compost Cup idea on Daniel Tyrkiel’s channel:

@feinschmeckergarten @Broadfork All the soil life drawings and images in the booklet are inspiring. Good luck with the Schleswig-Holstein soil sample, microscope, glass slides, and camera. Do you have the right experience? #compost, #nodig
A Compost Cup for Britain.
“Can you make the best, the most alive, nutrient-rich compost in Britain?”
Having my homemade compost analysed for its biology and nutrition (and advice on how to improve it) would be interesting.
Unfortunately at £138 per test it is too steep for me. #Composting #SoilHealth #Compost #SolarPunkSunday

Surprise ! I disturbed this little fellow from his winter sleep while stacking some wood.
He'll find another place : lots of fallen leaves, they like to sleep in a leave matress.

Great read. Long story short, avoid mined fertilizers. Use #compost and other organic waste instead. And give your #soil a break.
Plastic injection replaced sustaonable means and is grown unaffordable.
The experts and tools have been decimated by neglect.
My grandparents sold the business and it's manufacturing tools.
My uncles sold the union.
Of course I have nothing left but memes.

@Broadfork Congratulations. It is a good position to be in with capture and storage, where you can garden without using the tap. #nodig, #compost.
@Hesperalis Every month seems to fly by equally fast, except February, which moves tortuously slowly.
Good luck with the flower adventure next year.

November 29, 2025. We have an Indonesian hot sauce theme for this southern Minnesota snow day. The kitchen smells wonderful. Some of the fermented Sambal is getting a coconut and spices upgrade to become Sambal Kelapa. It’s four pint jars! The pan toasted coconut and spices upgrade is in the silver bowl. The straight Sambal is continuing to ferment in the brown crock. These recipe ideas are from #adelaide. #fermentation #minnesota, #sambal, #growyourown, #nodig, #compost

Hey #compostodon and #compost nerds - I'm working with a nature charity on their #composting next week.
They have a lot of woody material but no chipper (though might be able to befriend an arborist). We're going to look at ways around that and so far I've got the following ideas:
- Dead hedges: let it rot naturally in a way that helps wildlife.
- Biochar: would need to build a retort but could be a good activity.
- Hugelmound: probably not as they don't grow much.
What have I missed?
@Janet_52square Congratulations. The potato harvest is impressive. We had a good morning of gardening. Our three good garden things are placing leaf mulch on the vegetable garden, harvesting the last greens, and spraying the leaf covered garlic area with comfrey tea and worm tea in the rain barrel tea. #compost, #wormtea, #Vermiculture
What’s happening? The garden’s soil temperature is 7 C today. The temperature should trend down and down until early March because we are in southern Minnesota. The backdrop is beautiful leaf mulch. We are fortunate. Our neighborhood has a mix of mature deciduous trees that share leaves. The old forest was the Big Woods tree mix. The old prairie was the Oak Savanna tree mix. The last glacier retreated north about 10,000 years ago. #compost, #minnesota, #nodig, #gardening
Time once again to #compost those #pumpkins
Posted on November 2, 2025 by Charles Kuffner
"You know what to do.
The City of #HoustonTx Solid Waste Management Department, in partnership with Council Member #SallieAlcorn, is excited to announce the return of the 5th Annual #PumpkinCompostDropOff Program.
Don’t toss your pumpkins in the trash, compost them instead! From October 25 through November 29, Houston residents can drop off their used or unused pumpkins at two City of Houston facilities. All collected pumpkins will be transformed into nutrient-rich compost to help grow a greener Houston.
Please remove any candles, stickers, paint, or other non-pumpkin decorations before dropping off your pumpkins.
Last year’s event was a smashing success, diverting more than 25,260 pounds of pumpkins from Houston’s landfills, making it the most successful year yet. The city hopes to break that record in 2025 and divert even more #compostable material from the landfill.
'We’re proud to see Houstonians embracing composting and taking action to reduce waste,' said Director Larius Hassen, Director of Solid Waste Management 'It’s amazing to see how something as simple as a leftover pumpkin can help grow a more sustainable Houston'
'Pumpkins are everywhere, and I love seeing them. They get me excited for Halloween and Thanksgiving. And while pumpkin season is upon us, we know it won’t last forever. When your once-glorious pumpkin is ready to be retired, don’t throw it in the trash. Take advantage of the city’s pumpkin composting initiative. Turn your pumpkin into glorious compost to be used in city parks and green spaces,' said Council Member Sallie Alcorn.
Join us in turning holiday leftovers into something good for the earth. Together, we can make Houston cleaner, greener, and more sustainable, one pumpkin at a time.
Drop-off Locations:
City of Houston Reuse Warehouse
9003 N Main St, Houston, TX 77022
October 25th – November 29th
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Westpark Recycling Center
5900 Westpark, Houston, TX 77339
October 25th – November 29th
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Same as last year, more or less. You may find other options – as noted before, there’s a house in my neighborhood that collects them as feed for livestock – and that’s fine, pick what works best for you. Just don’t throw ’em in the trash, there’s no need for that."
