#conformity

A couple of years ago I realized that the only "inspirational" stories I have been told about "success" at my job (a university in the USA) could be summarized as "After I decided to Go Along To Get Along, everything was better!"

Seriously. The "uplifting" stories are about sucking up to a toxic older colleague so they don't give a spiteful tenure review, learning to anticipate the autocratic demands of administrators and satisfy enough of them to stay off their "problem employee" radar, dumbing down classes and inflating complaining students' grades to boost your student evaluations and get better performance reviews... ugh.

This hasn't been super helpful in most ways, but it has helped me understand why some of my experience has not been amazing.

A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

On every hand are the enemies of individuality and mental freedom. Custom meets us at the cradle and leaves us only at the tomb. Our first questions are answered by ignorance, and our last by superstition. We are pushed and dragged by countless hands along the beaten track, and our entire training can be summed up in the word –suppression. Our desire to have a thing or to do a thing is considered as conclusive evidence that we ought not to have it, and ought not to do it. At every turn we run against cherubim and a flaming sword guarding some entrance to the Eden of our desire. We are allowed to investigate all subjects in which we feel no particular interest, and to express the opinions of the majority with the utmost freedom. We are taught that liberty of speech should never be carried to the extent of contradicting the dead witnesses of a popular superstition. Society offers continual rewards for self-betrayal, and they are nearly all earned and claimed, and some are paid.

A quotation from Euripides

HECUBA:   Then no man on earth is truly free,
All are slaves of money or necessity.
Public opinion or fear of prosecution
forces each one, against his conscience,
   to conform.

The Badge of Submission: Why We Must Reject Digital Marks of Authority. In our hyper-mediated digital world, symbols like X's blue checkmark and similar verification badges function as potent "marks of authority." But beneath the surface of signifying authenticity, they represent a complex dynamic of validation, conformity, and control.

Listen, fellow progressives/liberals: it's hard to swallow (I know because it's me) but identifying as a member of the side of the culture war that identifies #authoritarianism, #conformity, #groupthink, #tribalism, etc. doesn't mean we're immune to those things. Not in the least.

It also doesn't mean you know what "cognitive dissonance" or "fragile masculinity" actually mean, but maybe those are separate issues. The main point is: Physican Cure Thyself is something we should almost all be told on a regular basis.

Is 'sane' just what most people agree on? Does being different automatically mean 'insane'? This quote challenges the very definition of normal. What if the outliers see things more clearly? Brain = broken.

Surreal digital painting in the style of René Magritte depicting a bright, tidy suburban street scene made unsettling by impossible details: a house floats slightly off the ground, streetlights appear to melt, and figures have objects like green apples or clocks instead of heads, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that challenges perceptions of reality.

A quotation from Orwell

But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by “thou shalt not,” the individual can practice a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by “love” or “reason,” he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

Quote of the day, 19 January: St. Mary Magdalen de’ Pazzi

Turning to an image of the Blessed Virgin, [Sister Mary Magdalen de’ Pazzi] said:

“O Mary! I see after all the most pure and resplendent eyes of my Spouse, looking down upon me with a countenance no longer troubled but benign. But, pray! tell me, O my Jesus, what did I do in so short a space of time for which I may have deserved so sweet and smiling a look?”

And she was answered: “Conformity of will.”

In August of 1588, the wine in a keg in the monastery having become sour and the mother prioress having no means to provide good wine, she ordered Sister Mary Magdalen to pray to Jesus that He might be pleased to turn the spoiled wine again into good wine.

Then our Saint, strengthened by obedience, took a little framed picture which represented St. [James], and going with it to the wine cellar, after a short prayer, made the sign of the cross over the keg.

After this, the sister butler came to draw wine, and found it, in fact, restored to its former good taste. The nuns gave thanks to God, who had so miraculously provided for their needs.

A fellow sister, Mary Angiola Santucci, was then confined to her bed by a serious illness, and, on hearing of this miracle, asked for a drink of the wine. No sooner had she tasted it than she felt a notable relief from her illness, and, feeling her hope of ultimate recovery increase, she wanted to taste more of it on the following day. After this, she felt better; and on the third day, taking the same small quantity, she recovered her health entirely, to the inexpressible wonder of the sisters, who could not help being cognizant the double prodigy worked through the virtue of our humble and holy [Sister].

Beige by Design

For humanity’s sake, let us be minds,
Not cogs in machines,
Not hands scrolling,
Allowing algorithms as proxies for our thoughts.
With passive queries and vacant eyes,
GPTs complete threads we barely sought to weave.

(With apologies to D H Lawrence)

Minimalist outfits, beige and cream colour palettes, and an air of perfection might not be ubiquitous, but they are widespread, particularly in influencer culture. This beige aesthetic is being claimed as creative output in a lawsuit, between Amazon influencers Sydney Nicole Gifford and Alyssa Sheil. Gifford is alleging copyright infringement on their “carefully curated” beige “clean girl” content. Sheil points out that they are influencing their followers with the help of a spreadsheet sent to all Amazon influencers by Amazon, and so they are all working from the same source material. They cannot help but be similar, close to identical. What does “creativity” mean when there are only so many ways one can model a champagne colored pyjama set against a latte colored wall?

The generative AI and Large Language Models we see being embedded in everyday software and online environments are trained on large bodies of content, frequently scraped from the internet. Without permission from authors (but with the enthusiasm of publishing companies), books and articles are scraped and included into the source material to train these tools.  What this means for people who are using genAI and LLMs to generate content (write emails, plan lessons, outline articles, answer essay questions) is that they are reusing what has already been written. And people using the same tools are working with the same source material.  What does creativity mean when there are only so many ways to extrude content from the slurry of preexisting work?

What does Beige look like when it is algorithmic? Algorithmic conformity leads us to homogenized cultural outputs, predictable content adhering to the most prevalent norms in whichever training dataset it is trained on, and inevitably the outputs from this beige generator will lead to beige societal outcomes.

How do we get to this beige-on-the-brain state?  People have been engaging with this recent article about GAI tools, and the “future of critical thinking,” and many have been struck by the notion of “cognitive offloading,” wherein people who use generative AI to “help them think” end up reducing their active role in thinking, critically or otherwise.  From the discussion in the article:

“The study highlighted that users who trust AI tools are more likely to rely on them for decision-making, thus reducing their engagement in critical thinking processes. This trust, fostered by the perceived reliability and convenience of AI tools, promotes a cognitive dependence that diminishes the need for active cognitive effort” (Gerlich 2025)

Human creativity, individual and collective, is sucked into, churned around, and then shoved out again in worse form than before by these machines.  There is nothing new, no insight to be gained, no unexpected delights in the world of genAI content.

Does genAI align with capitalism by promoting scalable, reproducible, bland content over unique content? The beige generator not only produces scalable, reproducible and bland content for the masses (or at least what the training dataset suggests are the masses). The AI content will adhere to proven formulas, those most prevalent in the training data, those that yielded maximum engagement, the formula for profit.

On BlueSky in early 2024 Rua M. Williams shared (with permission) a story of one of her research assistants losing themselves in the prose they generated with ChatGPT, out of a worry that their language skills were not adequate (they were!  All students need to learn things!).  Williams is not the only educator concerned about loss of student voices by using ChatGPT to “clean up” their writing. Jonathan W. Grey discovered that not only was one AI tool “helping” with a student’s grammar, it also “helpfully” deleted all references to Frantz Fanon in the essay! Students told to use ChatGPT to sound “more American” or “more confident” or “more white” (less engaged with Black theorists such as Fanon…?) sound less and less like themselves, and more and more like…something “neutral,” cream, or beige. The neutrality of the GAI algorithms is whiteness, it’s what has been visible and powerful before, it is not the potential for something new, a different way of valuing and representing people.

If you find yourself increasingly surrounded by “students should learn to use generativeAI” apologists, Arthur Perret’s “A Student’s Guide to (Not) Writing with ChatGPT” is a nice antidote, as is this conversation with Chris Gilliard

We would add our voices to the increasing number of people in education concerned for the preservation of spaces for people to try, to learn, to fail, to be messy.  We wish for people to have the freedom and time to figure out what their voices are, could be, what they want to be and sound like, independent of the machinery of algorithmic conformity, that reduces everything to beige.
