This photograph of a snow-covered conifer was taken from inside the tree's rain shadow. The tree is likely an eastern hemlock. Seen from underneath, several branches of flat, green needles stretch out against the backdrop of snow that weighs them down. At several points, the needles cradle the snow, holding the soft white flakes so gently that individual flakes can be seen. Six small, ovoid conifer cones appear at the center of the image, shadowed along the top sides, but lit along their undersides by reflected light from the snow beneath the tree. This side-light highlights the pattern of scales that form each nut-brown cone, making delicate, flower-like statements at the center of the photograph.
