A deep blue October sky with hazy thin clouds. Standing beside a coarse surfaced gray rock outcrop on the shoreline of a cove on a large lake. A similar rock outcrop rises near the far side of the cove. Thanks to thin sediment deposits, a leafy green ground-hugging plant covers much of the top of our rock and a pair of leafy green shrubs cling to its surface. The forest surrounding the lake has barely started turning autumn colors with the exception of maple trees scattered liberally along the far shoreline. These are decked out in bright oranges, reds and golds.

Beneath a brilliant blue autumn sky with a few fluffy clouds a quiet pond with hundreds of lily pads sits in a small, bowl-shaped valley between two ridges on our right and left. The shore in front of us is flatter and a bit marshy, with a dazzling thick carpet of ferns meeting clusters of water grasses at the water's edge. The bright greens of these plants and the lily pads are giving way to golds and golden browns. The pond and marsh are encircled with a forest of mature hemlocks and pines sporting darker shades of green and assorted hardwoods. Many of the latter are sporting autumn coats of red, orange or gold.

Standing in a pine grove on the shore of a large cove on an even larger lake. Beneath the pines, the forest floor is mostly open and coated in fallen needles except for a few small leafy shrubs. Straight ahead, the far shore of the lake is heavily wooded, as are the other two sides of the cove to our left and right. Standing on a rocky riverbank, a calm stretch of river slightly rippled by a gentle current. Both sides of the river are wooded, a forest of predominantly hardwoods. Some of the trees are showing the first touches of yellow, gold and orange. A deep blue sky with a few clouds and the forest are mirrored on the placid waters. Many of the trees are leaning out over the river in varying degrees to catch more sunlight, creating intricate crisscrossing patterns of reflections.

I’ve felt a lot of feelings in my life, but theres only one that is indescribable - how it feels to walk out into some dirt where you planted seeds months ago, and pick your dinner.
