Courts place people into #conservatorship by deciding they're mentally unfit -- a term which has been used against marginalized people. While the provision in question is not currently enforced, it could serve as a trigger law like after #RoeVWade.

What is Question 8?
Conservatorships are based on courts deciding that someone is mentally unfit to make their own decisions over their finances, housing, etc. The court can decide how they define "mentally unfit" and has historically used it to take agency away from marginalized people. Even though the Maine constitutional provision in question has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal court in the past and therefore cannot currently be enforced, as we've seen with Roe v. Wade, these decisions can be overturned at any time. It is important vote YES ON QUESTION 8 to strengthen voting rights for people in these situations before there is a chance for them to be taken away completely.

Speaking as someone who had a conservatorship forced on me, it sucked!
I didn't need it but wasn't offered a choice. It took me years to fight it but eventually I got out of it.
Prior to this event I was already on my own, paying my bills and living my life as best as possible. I the patient, was never consulted. People who didn't know a damn thing about me as a person decided they were smarter and knew better what to do.
