This is a black and white photo in landscape format of a large container ship docking in Long Beach, California (2015).
Stretching from the left of the image through the centre towards the right is a large, medium grey and weathered container ship. The ship is viewed from the bow and looking along the port (left) side towards the stern. The paint is badly worn, and covered with black marks above the waterline around the bow where countless tugs have pushed the vessel onto her berths. High on the bow is a large letter 'C', the first letter of the shipping line. About ten metres aft is the ship's name in large bold, black letters: 'COSCO NINGBO'. A further ten metres aft on the waterline is a large tug pushing the vessel towards the berth. The tug has a black hull surrounded with large tyres: the cause of all those black marks on the ship. Above the tug's black hull is a white superstructure with the words 'AmNav' and 'Independence' in black lettering. Above the superstructure is a control tower like wheelhouse surrounded with large rectangular windows. The ship is stacked with shipping containers, seven high above deck in places, with many more stowed below and about fifteen across. Towards the stern is another tug, again bow resting on the ships hull and pushing the vessel towards the dock. Further aft still is another container ship, already moored with gantry cranes overhead and loading and unloading the ship.

This is a colour photo of the stern of a large container ship listing to starboard (right) while loading and unloading in port. Long Beach, California (2015).
The lower twenty-five percent of the frame is filled with medium blue calm water with a few ripples from the afternoon sea breeze disturbing the surface. Running along the right margin of the image is the low, about two metres, side of the dock. The camera is about thirty metres aft of a large container ship moored to the dock. Four stout and taut mooring lines are stretching from the stern to the shore with many more out of view. Reaching upwards on along the right side of the photo are the tall, red, vertical legs of the gantry cranes that load and unload the many shipping containers from the ship. Two horizontal red and white striped booms can be seen reaching over the ship, with cables lowered down to load or unload a container. The ship's stern is flat and painted light grey, with the ships name 'OOCL SHENZHEN' and Hong Kong: the port of registry in bold blue letters. Above are ten rectangular openings about three metres above the waterline, it's from here that the mooring lines are fed out. A few metres above are three rows of thirteen further larger rectangular openings through which many of the stowed containers can be seen. The interesting and unusual aspect of this photo is that the ship has a noticeable list (its leaning) to starboard.
