New at Last Grotto: "The Basilica of the Little Flower" by Jacob Friesenhahn
A century-old San Antonio basilica speaks in the first person, bearing witness to the city's transformation—from nuns who transformed hunger into song, to McDonald's golden arches mimicking eternity. The poem navigates the tension between sacred endurance and urban decay, asking "How long do domes of faith / defy time's growing gravity?"

New #poem by Jacob Friesenhahn captures the spirit of San Antonio's iconic Liberty Bar on Alamo Street—the second in a pair exploring this beloved landmark. The poem meditates on hunger and remembrance, set in a former convent where devotion lives on in the intimate rituals of table: lastgrotto.net/posts/liberty-b #Poetry #ContemporaryPoetry #PoetryCommunity #PlacePoetics #AmericanLiterature #SanAntonio

22 septembre (poem by Latif Askia Ba)

In the six o'clock evening. I am waiting
outsidesun. Someday my prince. Inflected.
The man lifts me. With a crank. Into
the accessaride. A brand new room. Full
of sitting down.
Sometime in college
I started reading
myself. In beautiful compiler code.
Hooking my chair into place. In case
we flipover. I can dangle from the roof.
Like a monkey. I watch
as he takes three dollars
out of my wallet.
He counts each
one out loud.

A striking laser-etched design on a black anodized aluminum card. The front depicts a surreal composition: the silhouette of a human profile blends seamlessly with an intricate pattern of ferns, as if the foliage is growing from their thoughts. The background is textured with organic swirls resembling woodgrain, reinforcing themes of nature and mind intertwining. This visual allegory suggests the mystery of thought, creativity, and connection to the natural world—perhaps hinting at how one's inner consciousness mirrors the complexities of earth and sky.A minimalistic black surface engraved with silver text in a flowing, handwritten style. The poem reads:
"Ferns stitching patterns
no one can read,
as if the earth
mistook your mind
for its
sky."
The layout is simple yet evocative, with the handwritten font lending a personal touch. The engraving reflects light, creating a dynamic visual experience. The poem deepens the artwork's narrative, evoking themes of unreadable complexity, the relationship between human thought and nature, and an almost celestial perception of the mind.

There's a David Antin bit where he talks about the aboriginal Australians moving from one place to the next as they drained small aquifers that he cleverly, in his style, compares to Los Angeles. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or which of his books it's from? #poetry #contemporarypoetry #DavidAntin #Antin

The intricate details of the laser etching capture the flow of movement, adding depth and intensity to the composition. The background features subtle abstract elements, enhancing the surreal and dreamlike quality of the artwork. The reverse side of the card features a laser-etched poem in flowing handwriting. The poem reads:
"Flicker of a forgotten star-

"Stigmas in the skin's mosaic,
Roots-made cracks and
Eyes heavy with forgotten summers;
The burden of bloom and decay."

The front side of the card features an intricate, surreal artwork laser-etched onto black anodized aluminum. The composition centers on a cracked and weathered human face partially concealed by a dense array of blooming flowers and leaves. The interplay of organic elements and the face suggests a deep connection between nature and human decay, evoking themes of growth, beauty, and the inevitable passage of time. The meticulous detail in the etching highlights the textures of both the floral elements and the weathered skin, creating a striking contrast between life and erosion. The back side of the card displays a poem in elegant, handwritten script, also laser-etched onto the black anodized aluminum. The text reads: "Stigmas in the skin's mosaic, Roots-made cracks and Eyes heavy with forgotten summers; The burden of bloom and decay." The poem complements the front artwork, emphasizing themes of aging, the passage of time, and the bittersweet nature of memories. The signature of the artist, is prominently displayed below the poem, adding a personal touch to the piece.
