Signs of Undeclared ChatGPT Use in Papers Mounting

#Copyeditors are called out in this article for missing embarrassing errors that are also obvious signs of undeclared ChatGPT use. Which is fair. But copyeditors do not have the time they once did. #AcademicPublishers are investing less in #copyediting and relying more than ever on outsourcing and automated systems and are prioritizing quantity over quality. #PublicationEthics #LLM #ArtificialIntelligence

I support the #WGA strike on general principle. But I wonder if it isn't too little, too late. #Writing jobs have disappeared everywhere. Network #news operations have closed bureaus. A glut of #writers and #editors have, I assume, flooded the market since newspapers closed bureaus, let go #copyEditors, and ultimately went under. And, sorry, but trying to block #generativeAI is a losing battle.

As a #writer, I'm not happy about any of this. I'm just not sure it's gonna change.

This order of punctuation is bugging me. It’s not even a question, but according to style manuals the period or question mark goes inside of the end quotes. Or am I mis-recalling it. #copyeditors is this correct?

Hey , if you're on or , check your dashboard. They've changed the gig requirements to add things that don't reflect what we actually do. Forced to add voice and tone consistency to a PROOFREAD and STRAIGHT COPYEDIT. Section rewriting to a LINE/HEAVY COPYEDIT (rewriting is a ghostwriter's/writer's job, not an editor's). Proofreading and line editing to COACHING and a 3-CHAPTER EDIT! These requirements make no sense at all for these services.

I was lucky to copyedit the lovely book The Lichen Museum by A. Laurie Palmer last year. My own backyard is a rich resource for the topic!

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE!

My colleague Amy J. Schneider wrote THE definitive manual for us #fiction #copyeditors. Get yours directly from the University of Chicago Press and it will ship within a few days. (Amazon won't be shipping until March.)

The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction fills a need. CMoS is the standard for books, yes, but fiction is squishy. Here Amy gives us the how-to for dialogue, voice, and what to do "When Fact and Fiction Collide" (Chapter 9).

Get your copy. You need this.

@RookwoodEditing Thank you for this thread! My husband (I'm his unofficial, aka unpaid, book editor) sent me that rubbish article and it enraged me. It's absurd and vindictive. Illogical, as well, with the author contradicting herself towards the end: "Copyediting shares with poetry a romantic attention to detail, to the punctuation mark and the ordering of words. To treat someone else’s language with that fine a degree of attention can be an act of love."
