In September, I participated in The Ark of Coral Reefs cruise, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Kikai Institute for Coral Reef Sciences. I have written a blog post about the first day of the cruise, including an explanation for why I think Kikaijima is so interesting. Kikaijima is an island in southern Japan that is rimmed with coral reefs, but it is the fossils of corals that are everywhere on the island that really interests me.
