Original cover, cream-colored, parchment-textured background marked with faint graphite grid lines that form a central cross and a thin perimeter border. At the upper center, "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" is written in black hand-lettered Roman capitals, positioned above "PART I" in smaller capitals. Beneath this, "The Fellowship" is rendered in heavy, blackletter calligraphy, characterized by sharp serifs and curved flourishes on the capital "T" and "F". The primary visual element is a large, thick annulus colored in mustard yellow and inscribed with fine, cursive Tengwar script in black ink along its circumference. Within the negative space of this central ring, a stylized horizontal eye floats, defined by a red-outlined almond shape, a white sclera, and a vertical black pupil slit centered within a reddish iris. Rising from the top of the main ring, two stylized red flame shapes with tapering points curve outward and upward, flanking a smaller unadorned golden ring positioned at the apex. Below the central ring, the words "of the" are written in a small, lowercase serif font. Underneath, the word "Ring" appears in the same heavy blackletter style as the top title, featuring a prominent curved descender on the "R" and a looped tail on the "g". Flanking the word "Ring" are two smaller, plain mustard-yellow rings, one on the far left and one on the far right. At the bottom, the preposition "by" sits in small lowercase letters above "J.R.R. TOLKIEN," in black, serifed capitals.

First edition cover displays a stark white background containing five lines of capitalized text in a tall, bold, condensed sans-serif font. The typography features a deliberate misregistration effect, separating the glyphs into offset channels of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The yellow layer shifts upward and to the left. The cyan layer shifts strictly to the left. The magenta layer shifts to the right. The central black forms anchor the text. Where yellow and cyan overlap on the left edges, a distinct lime green band appears. Where magenta overlaps the black, a dark violet tone results. The top line reads "THE GODS". The yellow segment of the "T" floats almost entirely detached above the primary letterform. The second line reads "THEMSELVES". A thick black horizontal rule extends from the midpoint of the final "S" to the right edge. The third line, "A NOVEL BY", appears in a font size roughly one-third of the surrounding text, centered horizontally. The fourth line reads "ISAAC" and the fifth line reads "ASIMOV", both returning to the large dimensions of the title. The "A" characters feature low crossbars. The "M" in "ASIMOV" has a central vertex touching the baseline. The vertical spacing between lines is compressed. The right stroke of the "V" in "ASIMOV" exhibits a wide magenta band, while the left stroke shows a corresponding cyan band. The counter of the "O" in "GODS" contains a sliver of white space bounded by the shifting inner curves of the offset layers.
