I have been lucky enough to get hold of a new #CameraLens, a 10-18mm #Canon EF-S. Even on a #CropSensor it's pretty wide compared to what I am used to, making me think about #LensDistortion much more. A new #LearningCurve.

Tokina Unveils 23mm, 33mm, and 56mm f/1.4 APS-C E-Mount Lenses

Tokina has announced three new fast APS-C primes for Sony E-Mount: the atx-m 23mm f/1.4, the atx-m 33mm f/1.4, and the atx-m 56mm f/1.4. The three are designed to work in unison to give photographers wide, standard, and semi-telephoto options.

Tokina says that the lenses are designed for amateurs or semi-professionals and are suitable for both stills and video use. The three lenses are purposefully compact and lightweight and all feature fast but silent autofocusing thanks to a stepping motor (STM). The trio also features fully camera body communication to access five-axis image stabilization and all three have clickless aperture rings to smoothly control aperture manually when shooting video.

Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4

The widest of the trio, the 23mm f/1.4 features an aperture range of f/1.4 through f/16 through a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm and is constructed of 11 elements in 10 groups. Two of those elements are low dispersion SD glass elements.

While the lens is light and compact, it is still made of metal parts, specifically the barrel and the lens mount. The 23mm focal length translates to about 35mm on a full-frame camera. Tokina says this particular lens is ideal for street photography, landscapes, and portraits.

Below are a few sample images provided by the company:

Tokina's 33mm f/1.4 has an angle of view that is approximately 50mm on a full-frame camera and is designed to serve as a reliable portrait and landscape lens. It features an aperture range of f/1.4 through f/16 via a nine-bladed diaphragm. The company used a 10 element in nine group design that features a single low-dispersion glass element.

Below are some sample images taken with the lens:

The final lens in the trio of new primes is the 56mm f/1.4, which has an angle of view that is approximately 85mm on a full frame camera and is billed as an excellent portrait lens that works for both stills and video. The aperture range is the same as its two contemporaries, f/1.4 through f/16, and it also uses the same nine-bladed diaphragm design. It uses a 10 element in nine group optical arrangement of which one is a low dispersion glass element.

All three lenses come with a two-year limited warranty and are expected to be available on November 12. The optics look like new mount options that were previously made available for Fujifilm X-mount cameras, and while pricing was not explicitly provided by Tokina at the time of announcement for these E-mount versions, the lenses will likely not deviate too far from the cost of the current Fujifilm selection: the 33mm f/1.4 currently sells for $379, the 23mm f/1.4 is available for $429, and the 56mm f/1.4 can also be purchased for $429.

Sigma Unveils the Smallest f/2.8 Zoom for APS-C: 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN

Sigma has announced the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens which it bills as the smallest and lightest f/2.8 zoom lens for APS-C format mirrorless cameras on the market.

Available for both E-mount and L-Mount, the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN is also Sigma's first APS-C size mirrorless zoom lens, the new optic has an equivalent zoom range of 27-75mm that the company says makes it ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture, and events. Thanks to a closer focusing distance of 12.1cm and a maximum magnification of 1:2.8, it is also suitable for macro-style close-up photography.

The lens is currently the smallest and lightest in its class (defined as autofocus compatible f/2.8 constant aperture zoom lenses designed for APS-C), and boasts a maximum diameter of 65.4mm, a length of 74.5mm, and a weight of 290 grams (about 10 ounces).

The f/2.8 aperture is constant through the zoom range which makes the lens work better for low-light situations and easier to obtain defocused backgrounds.

The lens is constructed of 13 elements in 10 groups, of which one is an SLD element and three others are aspherical elements. Sigma says that those lens's three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements coupled with the minimization of the total number of elements in the lens overall yields superb optical quality without excessive weight. Sigma also leans on the use of in-camera aberration correction to further eliminates optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting. This feature isn't available in all cameras and available corrections may vary depending on the camera model.

The lens features a seven-bladed rounded aperture diaphragm, is dust and splash resistant, and features Sigma's super multi-layer coating.

Sigma says that the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN has fast and near-silent autofocus capabilities that makes it well suited to a range of applications including quiet environments as well as video production. The company says that the small weight and size makes it especially suitable for mounting on gimbals as it is much easier to balance.

The SIGMA 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens will be available for $549 near the end of October.

Nikon Launches the DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Zoom Lens for Z-Mount

Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z-mount DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Nikon positions it as a high-power zoom lens that is extremely compact and easy to carry, making it an ideal travel or everyday lens.

According to the company, the new 18-140mm compact zoom lens from Nikon measures just 3.6 inches (90mm) long, weighs approximately 11.2 ounces (315 grams), and has a 0.2 meter (7.9 inches) minimum focusing distance at the wide-angle position letting users capture dynamic close-up images in scenarios like product and tabletop photography. The compact size and weight should make it an excellent choice for a walk-about lens that photographers can use for capturing nearly any scenario presented to them.

The company says the new lens will achieve consistently high resolution regardless of focal length and shooting distance, making it a good choice for still photography as well as video recording. The new lens also has a five-stop vibration reduction system (VR) that will let users get sharper and more stable images and video during telephoto shooting or low-light situations. Nikon did not specify if this improves when combined with a camera's on-sensor stabilization.

The 18mm-140mm telephoto zoom lens covers a 27mm-210mm equivalent range on a 35mm full-frame sensor and has a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.33x at the maximum telephoto position. The lens has a 62mm filter thread.

The new lens is constructed of 17 elements in 13 groups, of which two are ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and two others are aspherical elements, which usually are applied to reduce chromatic and comatic aberrations while improving overall resolving power. It also utilizes a seven-bladed rounded aperture diaphragm.

Select functions can be assigned to the control ring for enhanced control during still and video shooting, and the company also says the autofocus is fast, precise, and incredibly quiet thanks to the use of an STM (stepping motor) system that also helps reduce shifting of focus when zooming in or out during video shooting. Nikon also says that it maintains the angle of view when adjusting focus manually.

The new Nikkor Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR telephoto zoom lens will be available to order in November for $600.
